Calculate a lower bleach concentration
The bleach dilution calculator uses C1V1 = C2V2 to find the volume of stock product needed for a lower target concentration. Choose percent or ppm, enter stock and target values on that same basis, then enter final solution volume. The result reports stock volume and the remaining water volume in the selected litre or millilitre unit.
For 5 percent stock, a 0.1 percent target, and 1 L final volume, the calculation uses 0.02 L of stock and 0.98 L of water. That is 20 mL stock brought to a final volume of 1,000 mL. The target must be lower than the stock because adding water cannot make a solution more concentrated.
Keep both concentrations on one basis
Percent labels can mean mass/mass, mass/volume, or volume/volume. Both concentration inputs must use the same meaning from the same product information; a number marked only with a percent sign is not enough to justify conversion between bases. Likewise, do not combine a percent stock entry with a ppm target unless an authoritative source supplies a valid conversion for that exact formulation.
The arithmetic cancels the matching concentration units, leaving a volume. It assumes the stock concentration is the active concentration relevant to the label instruction. Product names, household categories, and scent or viscosity descriptions do not establish that value. Some laundry or splash-reducing products may not be intended for disinfection, so read the actual label before calculating.
Follow the product label, not a generic recipe
Use only the concentration, application, surface, contact time, ventilation, storage, and protective-equipment directions printed on the product label or supplied by the responsible authority. A mathematically correct dilution is not automatically effective or approved for every purpose. If label instructions conflict with a generic example, the label controls and this page should not be used to override it.
Never mix bleach with other cleaners or disinfectants. This calculator intentionally gives no compatibility recipes because dangerous gases or reactions can result from combinations that appear ordinary. Prepare only what the label permits, use suitable ventilation, and keep products away from children and pets. Seek local poison-control or emergency guidance after a suspected harmful exposure.
Check stock, water, and final volume
Multiply the reported stock volume by stock concentration and compare it with final volume multiplied by target concentration; both products should match. Add stock volume and water to reproduce final volume. If the stock volume exceeds final volume or water becomes negative, the entries do not describe a dilution and should be checked for swapped values or mismatched concentration bases.
The displayed water amount is the arithmetic difference between final volume and stock volume. In careful laboratory preparation, “bring to final volume” can differ from simply adding measured volumes because mixtures may not be perfectly additive. Follow the preparation technique stated by the product or procedure, and use measuring equipment suited to the required accuracy.
