Calculate acid-base equivalence quantities

The neutralization calculator solves one acid normality, acid volume, base normality, or base volume from the other three values. Choose the unknown, use one volume unit for both sides, and enter normalities that already represent equivalents per litre for the reaction being studied.

For example, 25 mL of 0.1 N acid requires 12.5 mL of 0.2 N base at equivalence. The base has twice as many equivalents per litre, so half as much volume is required. The result shows acid and base roles rather than presenting four anonymous values.

Understand NacidVacid = NbaseVbase

At the equivalence point, acid equivalents equal base equivalents. Normality multiplied by volume gives proportional equivalent amount, so NacidVacid = NbaseVbase when both volumes use the same unit. The calculator rearranges this equality for the selected unknown and prints the coefficient direction.

Normality is reaction-specific. One molar sulfuric acid does not have one universal normality in every reaction, and redox or precipitation equivalents use different definitions. Enter a normality taken from the balanced reaction or validated analytical method; the page deliberately does not infer valence from a compound name.

Use matching volume units and reverse checks

Millilitres may be used on both sides because the same conversion factor cancels. Litres may also be used on both sides. Mixing millilitres and litres without conversion creates a thousandfold error. The selected unit remains beside the calculated volume to make the shared basis easy to review.

Multiply the displayed normality and volume on each side. The two products should match within rounding. If the unknown normality or volume seems unreasonable, inspect which side was divided and confirm that acid and base values were not swapped. A zero or negative value cannot describe the positive equivalence relationship used here.

Separate equivalence from an observed endpoint

The stoichiometric equivalence point is not always identical to a color indicator endpoint or instrument reading. Acid and base strength, reaction kinetics, side reactions, carbonate uptake, standardization, temperature, and measurement technique can affect a real titration. This page calculates the stated equivalent balance only.

Do not use the result as a mixing or dosing instruction for unknown chemicals. Confirm identity, concentration, balanced reaction, protective equipment, waste handling, and the approved procedure.
