Line 5 strike in Iron County
Enbridge estimates that approximately 31,000 barrels of propane and butane were released from its Line 5 pipeline in northern Wisconsin after a parked, unoccupied third-party subcontractor flatbed truck rolled forward into an open excavation and struck the pipe on Aug. 25. The company said the incident occurred during work on a Line 5 valve project near Saxon in Iron County, and the affected section was immediately isolated. No injuries were reported, though a nearby rural home was evacuated as a precaution.
Scale of the release and response operation
The estimated release is equivalent to about 976,500 gallons. Around 150 Enbridge personnel and other responders are supporting the response, and Enbridge began using trailer-mounted flare stacks to burn off remaining vapors from the isolated section of pipe. A half-mile evacuation zone around the incident site remains in place, along with a "no-fly" zone issued by the Iron County Sheriff, while electricity to 55 nearby residents was temporarily shut off to reduce ignition risks. Air monitoring continues at the flare site, the incident site and in surrounding areas, with local first responders standing down as a private contractor joined to support those duties.
Federal and state oversight
The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is leading the federal response and has deployed an investigator to the site. Wisconsin regulators have separately requested information on air monitoring, groundwater conditions and other environmental impacts associated with the release. Enbridge said it continues to work toward safely restoring service to Line 5 by Sept. 5.
Pipeline's role and ongoing reroute work
Line 5 transports up to 23 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids per day between Superior, Wisconsin, and Sarnia, Ontario, and Enbridge describes the line as critical infrastructure serving 10 refineries and propane production facilities in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. Separately, construction continues on Enbridge's roughly $1 billion, 41-mile Line 5 reroute around the Bad River Reservation in northern Wisconsin, a project that remains distinct from the Iron County incident response.
