Nvidia has confirmed that its DLSS 5 neural rendering technology will eventually support RTX 40-series GPUs, according to reporting on September 5, 2026. The company has not announced a release date for the Ada Lovelace generation, saying only that work on RTX 40-series support will follow further optimization of the RTX 50 series due later this fall.

Ada Lovelace compatibility hinges on fourth-generation Tensor Cores

The technical basis for backward compatibility is that RTX 40-series GPUs use fourth-generation Tensor Cores that already support the FP8 format DLSS 5 relies on. By contrast, RTX 30-series GPUs use third-generation Tensor Cores that lack FP8 support, which Nvidia cites as the primary reason it has remained silent on DLSS 5 for the RTX 30 series.

Desktop RTX 40-series users will get a limited on/off toggle

Nvidia has confirmed that desktop RTX 40-series players will receive only a basic on/off toggle rather than the in-depth controls offered on RTX 50-series hardware. The company has not detailed how laptop RTX 40-series implementations will differ, if at all.

DLSS 5 ships as a Blackwell-exclusive feature with NBA 2K27

Nvidia officially launched 3D-guided neural rendering as a Blackwell exclusive for RTX 50-series GPUs on September 3 inside NBA 2K27. The technology has shipped in that single launch title alongside a new GeForce Game Ready Driver and is currently supported on RTX 50-series desktop GPUs, RTX 50-series laptop GPUs, and GeForce NOW. Nvidia has described DLSS 5 as its "most computationally demanding model to date," citing a 5x performance gain since its March announcement and noting that further model updates are expected later this fall.

Performance demands and unofficial RTX 40-series use

DLSS 5 originally required two RTX 5090 cards when it debuted at Nvidia's 2026 GTC event, though six months of optimization have since lowered GPU headroom requirements so that a single RTX 5090 can run the technology at respectable framerates. Modders have already extracted DLSS 5 from a beta build of NBA 2K27 and gotten it running unofficially on RTX 40-series GPUs, even as Nvidia has yet to fully test or further optimize the feature for that generation.
