Canvas turns store setup into a conversation with Sidekick

Shopify on October 1, 2026 introduced Canvas, a new site-building workspace that lets merchants set up and redesign their Shopify storefronts by chatting with the company's Sidekick AI agent. The product renders a merchant's actual theme code in real time, so changes made through conversation appear on a live canvas rather than in a static preview. Merchants can still click individual elements to edit them directly, but Shopify designed the experience around telling Sidekick what to do and watching the storefront update.

Canvas differs from Shopify's earlier no-code editor, which required rearranging modular sections within a chosen theme and typically needed a developer for deeper customization. With Canvas, Sidekick now operates directly on theme files, and Shopify has simplified its underlying theme architecture so the agent can understand and modify store structure, logic, and design.

How Sidekick builds, edits and validates a storefront

Inside Canvas, Sidekick zooms and pans across the full storefront, applying changes that propagate across the files and templates that make up a Shopify theme. The agent asks merchants questions, proposes design approaches, and remembers earlier preferences so users do not have to repeat the same instructions. Shopify said Sidekick also takes screenshots of its work and validates the underlying code, using both signals to refine a design before presenting it to the merchant.

Sidekick itself is not new; Shopify has used it to write code, build apps, customize themes, and make other edits. Canvas marks the first time those capabilities have been pulled together into a full site-building product. The agent is being expanded ahead of the launch, with Shopify saying it made more than 25 million edits to merchant themes during the first half of 2026.

Early access, limitations and adoption signals

Shopify told TechCrunch the product is still new and described several areas it plans to expand over time, including third-party theme support, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates. Canvas is currently desktop-only, and the company said it will not replace Shopify's existing online store editor in the near term.

Separately, Shopify director of product Ben Sehl, who co-founded clothing brand Kotn, said merchants can now create a customized store in about 20 minutes using the new workflow, compared with weeks of work even for someone with coding experience.

Competitive context and other developments

Canvas enters a market already populated by AI-powered site-building tools from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, alongside vibe-coding platforms such as Lovable and Replit. Shopify positioned Canvas as part of a broader shift toward building websites without writing code directly.

Separately, MediaPost reported on October 1, 2026 that Shopify launched a site-building tool and is integrating a Meta AI agent, a development Shopify has not publicly detailed in the materials reviewed.
