Shopify pulls back after an 18% August run

Shopify shares dropped 4% to $147.24 in Monday midday trading, extending a sharp retreat on a session with no company news, analyst downgrade, or guidance change. The move comes after the stock climbed 18% over the prior month through Friday's close, leaving traders weighing routine profit taking against a deeper unwind at the top of the online commerce complex. Shopify's day range of $144.88 to $151.28 sat against a previous close of $152.90, and the stock is now trading well below the high end of its 52-week range of $94.00 to $182.19.
Marketplace peers drift lower in the same session
Online marketplace stocks softened alongside Shopify but by narrower margins. eBay fell 2% to $103.94 in the same midday session, while Etsy slipped 2% to $81.98, closing out August with a small step back after a much larger advance earlier in the year. Both names were characterized as working through general sector caution rather than name-specific news.
Sector and index context for the selloff
The broader tape offered little cover. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) was down 0.1% to $117.08, and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down 0.52% to $765.35, both marginal moves that left Shopify's decline as the sharpest drawdown in the group. The setup leaves existing holders trimming exposure into the close rather than reacting to any fresh news from the company.
B2B growth underpinned the August rally
The August advance had concrete fundamentals behind it. Shopify's Q2 2026 report on August 5 delivered 76% year-over-year growth in business-to-business gross merchandise volume, well above the company's overall GMV growth of 32%. Total GMV reached $116 billion in the quarter, keeping Shopify in the top tier of global commerce platforms by volume. During the quarter the company also extended its native B2B capabilities beyond Shopify Plus for the first time, letting more merchants run wholesale and direct-to-consumer operations from a single admin and widening the addressable merchant pool.
Other developments
Separately, Pluang republished the same Shopify profit-taking narrative on August 31, reiterating investor focus on whether the stock stabilizes near $147 ahead of the expected Q3 earnings report, which is projected to show continued revenue growth.
