Art Week NYC organizers announced Friday that 32 cultural institutions will participate in the event's inaugural edition, scheduled for Nov. 11–14. The roster includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Frick Collection, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Queens Museum, El Museo del Barrio and the New York Public Library, according to WWD's report on the announcement. Additional participating organizations named in the announcement include the International Center of Photography, the High Line, Madison Square Park Conservancy, the FLAG Art Foundation and the Immigrant Artist Biennial. ARTnews reported the same 32-institution figure, listing the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Queens Museum among the museums, alongside nonprofits ArtTable, the Madison Square Park Conservancy and the Brooklyn Experimental Art Foundation.
New Museum to host programming on art, filmmaking and AI
The New Museum will serve as the event's primary institutional partner and is scheduled to host five public conversations on Nov. 14 with Artforum, under the title "Site Conditions: Five Talks on Art and the City." WWD reported that the program will bring together artists, architects, filmmakers, critics and writers to discuss museum redesigns, artists moving into filmmaking, the cost of working in New York and the use of artificial intelligence in studio practice. The New Museum talks are among the scheduled components of the four-day event; additional programming details are expected before November, according to WWD.
Event spans four gallery neighborhoods and 80-plus galleries
Art Week NYC first announced its gallery lineup in August, including Hauser & Wirth, Gagosian, David Zwirner and Pace Gallery, with more than 80 galleries confirmed for the inaugural event. ARTnews and BankBit reported that the event will center on New York's four main gallery neighborhoods: Chelsea, the Lower East Side, Tribeca and the Upper East Side, with programming ranging from walking tours to artist talks and gallery openings. ARTnews, Art in America and Artforum, described by BankBit as three leading authorities on contemporary art, launched Art Week NYC earlier this summer.
City officials and partners frame the event's civic role
New York City Council Deputy Speaker Dr. Nantasha Williams said the expanded roster offers a chance to "introduce people to artists and cultural spaces they may not otherwise encounter," according to WWD. BankBit quoted a separate city council statement noting that New York's "world-renowned galleries and museums draw art lovers from all over the globe, but they belong first and foremost to the New Yorkers who live here." Select museums and institutions are participating in partnership with Bloomberg Connects, WWD reported. ARTnews, Art in America and Artforum are owned by Penske Media Corp., which also owns WWD, the outlet that broke the institutional lineup details.
