Ryan Coogler's screenplay triumph
Ryan Coogler won the best original screenplay Oscar for Sinners at the 98th Academy Awards, becoming only the second Black writer to take the category after Jordan Peele, who won in 2018 for Get Out. Coogler, who also directed Sinners, thanked the Academy, his fellow nominees and his cast and crew, singling out his producer and wife Zinzi, his parents, and his children, telling them memories are all we have and asking them to remember the night.
A competitive original screenplay field
Coogler prevailed over a strong slate of nominees that included Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value, and Robert Kaplow for Blue Moon. His win capped an awards-season run in which Sinners also collected best original screenplay at the Baftas, the Writers Guild Awards and the Critics Choice Awards, alongside a Golden Globe nomination.
Sinners, Michael B Jordan and a vampire siege
Coogler's screenplay centres on Michael B Jordan in a dual role as twins Smoke and Stack Moore, whose juke joint comes under attack from vampires led by Jack O'Connell. Jordan went on to win the best actor Oscar for his performance in the film.
Indian couture breaks through on the red carpet
The 98th Academy Awards red carpet featured a notable showing of Indian designers alongside Hollywood's regular fashion circuit. Li Jun Li appeared in a Gaurav Gupta ensemble built around a sculptural red satin corset with fluid, architectural draping, while singer Rei Ami wore a Rahul Mishra black-and-gold mini dress paired with a voluminous embroidered cape that reflected hundreds of hours of handwork.
Sabyasachi jewelry and vintage glamour
Veteran jeweler Sabyasachi Mukherjee supplied vintage-inspired pieces to multiple attendees. Ginnifer Goodwin and Rachel McAdams both chose Sabyasachi jewelry, including a choker and drop earrings set with gemstones that emphasised handcraft over mass production.
Swadesh, Reliance Retail and veteran Indian ateliers
Swadesh, an artisanal initiative by Reliance Retail, joined veteran designers Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla to bring traditional textiles to the ceremony. Stylist Zanna Roberts Rassi's beaded crop top, a collaboration with Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, drew on more than 2,000 man-hours of embroidery and beading, while Minnie Driver wore a Swadesh necklace crafted in Surat and handcrafted brooches appeared on Law Roach and Brandi Carlile.
