What changed

HBO has cast Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart, the vain Defense Against the Dark Arts professor introduced in the second Hogwarts year, as a new series regular on the second season of its Harry Potter television adaptation. The casting was reported on August 12, 2026, with outlets noting the news was confirmed the previous day, August 11. Lockhart was previously portrayed on screen by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Hoult is best known for playing Lex Luthor in James Gunn's Superman and for three seasons of Hulu's The Great, the latter earning him an Emmy nomination in 2022. Reporting on the casting highlighted a full-circle note: Hoult had auditioned unsuccessfully for roles including Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy in the original film series more than two decades earlier.
Scope and production plan
Season 2 is designed to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as the next installment of HBO's planned book-by-book run through J.K. Rowling's seven novels, a project spanning roughly a decade. HBO renewed the series for Season 2 in May 2026, before Season 1 had premiered, and Season 1, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set to debut on December 25, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner returns for Season 2, now joined by co-showrunner Jon Brown, a Succession writer and Season 1 contributor. Filming on Season 2 is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, overlapping with the final stretch of Season 1 production. No official Season 2 premiere date has been announced; based on the production timeline, late 2027 is the likely window.
Returning cast and known change
Most of the principal cast from Season 1 is expected to return for Season 2: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
One confirmed change: Gracie Cochrane, originally cast as Ginny Weasley for Season 1, will not return. Her family cited unforeseen circumstances in a May 2026 statement, and the role is being recast for Season 2. Casting is also underway for other Chamber of Secrets characters, including Colin Creevey.
What the season will cover
Season 2 is expected to draw on the second book's major storylines, including the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, the attacks on students, and the introduction of the Basilisk and Tom Riddle's diary. Reporting also points to expanded roles for Ginny Weasley, Lucius Malfoy, and Dobby, along with Lockhart's fraudulent exploits and the memory-charm reveal, and a deeper look at Hogwarts' secrets and the growing threat of dark magic.
What remains uncertain
No premiere date for Season 2 has been officially announced; late 2027 is described as a likely window based on the production schedule rather than a confirmed release. Casting for several Chamber of Secrets roles, including Ginny Weasley and Colin Creevey, was still listed as in progress at the time of reporting.
