A revamped coaching lineup for season 15
Tones And I, Melanie C and Richard Marx will make their coaching debuts on The Voice Australia, joining returning coach Ronan Keating and defending champion Kate Miller-Heidke. Seven announced the five-person panel on July 27, billing the forthcoming season as the biggest shake-up in the program's history and pairing the lineup with a new format twist that is being kept under wraps, including from the coaches themselves. The panel blends Australian and international artists across pop, rock and singer-songwriter careers, with Tones And I described by the network as a homegrown global star, Melanie C identified by her Spice Girls profile, and Richard Marx cited as having sold more than 30 million albums worldwide with writing and production credits for artists including Luther Vandross, Keith Urban and NSYNC.
Tones And I arrives as a surprise addition
Tones And I, whose 2019 single "Dance Monkey" reached number one in more than 30 countries and has been streamed more than three billion times on Spotify, will take her place as a secret fifth coach. The 33-year-old singer-songwriter, born Toni Watson and raised on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, said joining the program is something she once dreamed about. "I grew up watching The Voice, as any aspiring singer, artist or songwriter would," she said. "I'm so excited. I can't believe I get my very own big red chair with my very own big red buzzer – it's very showbiz of me!" Fellow coaches said her arrival was concealed from them until filming, with Ronan Keating describing it as "a total shock to the four coaches, a complete surprise," and Melanie C calling the addition "absolutely brilliant."
Defending champion and host set to return
Kate Miller-Heidke returns after coaching last season's winner, 19-year-old Alyssa Delpopolo, and has said she is determined to defend her title against four new and returning rivals. She identified Richard Marx as "definitely" the most competitive of her fellow coaches, noting that "he does not mince his words and he's a fearsome competitor. When he starts reeling off his CV, it's honestly dazzling, the people he's worked with." Keating, who previously coached on both the Australian and British editions of the franchise, returns after his 2016 stint on the Australian series. Veteran host Sonia Kruger will also return to guide performers through the competition and manage the coaching panel.
Prize package and premiere details
The winner of the season will receive a $100,000 cash prize alongside an all-inclusive recording development package that includes production, recording, mixing and mastering, plus access to A&R and label services. Seven has positioned the new season as a relaunch of the format, though specific changes to the blind auditions, battles or live shows have not been disclosed. The Voice Australia season 15 premieres at 7pm on Sunday, August 2, on Seven and 7plus, with further episodes scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm on the same platforms.
