Emirates Film Festival crowns "Bukal" in Dubai
The 12th Emirates Film Festival 2026 was held on July 26 at the New Covent Garden Theatre in the Mall of the Emirates, Dubai, according to Philstar.com reporting dated July 31, 2026. Epy Quizon's "Bukal" emerged as the festival's biggest winner, taking the Best Film award, with Quizon also receiving Best Director. Filipino entrepreneur and producer Aquino Plotado received the Best Film Producer Award for "As the Call, So the Echo," continuing the short's awards streak after Enzo Pineda won Best Actor and writer-director Rusty Palacio Guarin won Best Director at the previous edition. Other winners included Francis Gacer (Best Screenplay for "Tilamsik sa Dakilang Apoy"), Vera (Best Cinematography), and regional winners from Southeast Asia, India, Egypt, France, the GCC and the UAE. Special awards went to Charmae Cabrera (EFF Promising Actress), Ron Jordan De Ocampo (EFF Promising Actor) and Orli Gayeta (EFF Filmmaker Recognition Award). Festival founder and CEO Ron Awa said he hopes to expand the event's global reach and further position Dubai as a hub for cinema and cultural exchange.
"The Leader" premieres at Fantasia in Montreal
Director Michael Gallagher's "The Leader" held its Canadian premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal on July 30, 2026, according to Montreal CityNews. Starring Vera Farmiga and Tim Blake Nelson, the film explores how dissatisfied housewife Bonnie Lu Nettles and religiously devout Marshall Herff Applewhite formed the group later known as Heaven's Gate.
