The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced on Sept. 24 that John Malkovich will receive its Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the 42nd edition, scheduled for Feb. 3–13, 2027, in the coastal town north of Los Angeles. The honor recognizes his turn as a CIA agent in Martin McDonagh's "Wild Horse Nine," in which he stars opposite Sam Rockwell as two operatives who travel from Santiago to Easter Island on the eve of the 1973 Chilean coup. SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling said Malkovich "gives this year in 'Wild Horse Nine' his best performance to date in which he combines pathos, volatility, vulnerability and tenderness," calling the role "a high wire act that shows us what a commanding artist he is."
