A Federal Agency Stages a Reality-Style Business Finale

The U.S. Small Business Administration will bring five small businesses to Washington on Sept. 18 for a live pitch competition in which they divide $1 million in privately funded prize money, a format multiple outlets described as mirroring ABC's "Shark Tank." The Washington event is the finale of the SBA's Freedom 250 initiative marking 250 years of American free enterprise; the agency launched the program in May as the Patriot Pitch Competition and has rebranded the live finale the Million-Dollar Pitch Competition.
Celebrity Judges and Host Tied to Trump
Rapper Nicki Minaj will judge the finalists alongside entrepreneur and private-equity fund manager Grant Cardone and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, whom President Donald Trump appointed as the first U.S. Chief Design Officer in 2025. Dean Cain, best known for portraying Superman in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," will host rather than judge. SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said in a news release that the panelists "will only add to the excitement of this historic celebration of free enterprise," citing their experience building "globally recognized personal and business brands and multibillion-dollar portfolios." Minaj, who has publicly backed Trump, announced her involvement on X, writing that she is "sooooooooooo looking forward to this" and calling the role "a major, MAJOR KEY." The Independent noted that Cain is also an ardent Trump supporter.
Five Finalists and a $1 Million Prize Pool
Five finalists were chosen from 1,182 submissions: Compotech, Inc. of Brewer, Maine; Winton Machine of Suwanee, Georgia; Plas-Tech Tooling of Garner, Iowa; Red River of Gillette, Wyoming; and VetPowered LLC of San Diego, California. Every finalist will receive prize money, with the winner taking $400,000, second place $250,000, third $150,000, fourth $125,000 and fifth $75,000. Applicants were evaluated on competitiveness, innovation, economic impact, job creation and underlying business fundamentals, and finalists were required to be businesses that had previously used qualifying SBA capital products.
Privately Funded Cash, Public Promotion
The $1 million prize pool is being supplied by Clover Network, Inc., a financial-technology company whose products include point-of-sale and business-management systems used by merchants, rather than by taxpayers, according to the SBA. That arrangement gives the competition an unusual public-private character, with a federal agency organizing and promoting the event while a private company funds the awards the agency describes as growth capital.
Broadcast Details Still to Come
The competition will be taped in front of a live audience in Washington and later aired on television and streamed online, with specific broadcast and streaming details to be announced by the SBA. The Sept. 18 presentations before the celebrity panel are the next scheduled milestone for the competition.
