Spanish streamers anchor the 2026 lineup

The 2026 San Sebastián International Film Festival opens Sept. 18 in the Basque Country resort city, running through Sept. 26, with Spain's small-screen operators once again driving the country's most ambitious national showcase. Variety reports that television platforms, rather than theatrical studios, are powering Spain's global breakout, citing five Cannes main competition berths over the past year, more than any other country outside France. Festival director José Luis Rebordinos told Variety that "Spanish cinema has never been so powerful, with so many international titles," a strength that runs through the entire program.

"La Bola Negra" leads the festival's biggest local title

The marquee Spanish title is "La Bola Negra," a Movistar Plus Original from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi that Variety describes as Cannes' biggest Oscar contender and now San Sebastián's biggest local draw. The streamer has talked about backing "event auteur films" as it launched its first movie slate, and the festival is feeling the demand: "We're being flooded with requests for tickets and we haven't even announced its screening date, let alone opened sales," Rebordinos told Variety in late August. The film's Cannes-to-San Sebastián crossover illustrates the synergies the festival is touting between the two events.

A Hollywood-heavy guest list

Hollywood names bulk up the guest roster. Brad Pitt returns to San Sebastián for the first time since "Inglourious Basterds" with "Heart of the Beast," a Paramount Pictures release directed by David Ayer. Penélope Cruz, fresh off a TIFF Special Tribute Award, arrives with two films: "The Invite" and "La Bola Negra," both positioned as Oscar contenders as awards-season conversation spills into the festival. Variety also flags Rodrigo Sorogoyen's "The Beloved" as a likely Javier Bardem draw.

Donostia Awards and world premieres

The festival's honorary Donostia Awards bookend the event. New German Cinema figure Werner Herzog receives his at the Sept. 18 opening ceremony, while Naomi Watts picks up hers on Sept. 19. The competition slate also features world premieres of new films from "Spencer" director Pablo Larraín (the Netflix project "My Sad Dead"), J.A. Bayona and Fernando Trueba, reinforcing the festival's reputation for launching prestige Spanish-language and international cinema.

Industry conference and Spain's production surge

Running alongside the screenings, the San Sebastián–CAA Media Finance Creative Investors Conference gathers executives from Acme AI & FX, Black Bear International, Media Capital Technologies, Mubi, Neon, Studiocanal and Sumerian Pictures, plus filmmakers including the Larraín brothers and Rodrigo Teixeira, to discuss the U.S. theatrical landscape and Europe's current challenges. The industry backdrop underlines Spain's production surge: Variety cites European Audiovisual Observatory figures showing global streamers poured €2.0 billion ($2.3 billion) into Spain in 2024, compared with €0.8 billion ($0.9 billion) into France and €0.7 billion ($0.8 billion) into Germany, and Cannes Marché du Film Focus data placing Spanish feature output at 423 films last year, nearly double France's 228.

Next milestone

The festival's main competition and Donostia tributes unfold nightly through Sept. 26, with Watts's award ceremony on Sept. 19 the next marquee public event after Thursday's opening.
