Death and final hours in Chennai

Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected senior performers of South Indian cinema, died at 1:59 pm on Friday, August 21, at a private hospital in Chennai after being hospitalized for age-related health complications. She was 94. Nadigar Sangam president and actor Nassar confirmed the death in a statement that also announced her mortal remains would be placed at Centoph Road, Teyampet, from 5 pm for fans, friends and members of the film fraternity to pay their last respects.
Hospitalization and immediate tributes
Janaki had been admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, and was receiving intensive medical care after falling ill. Actor Kayal Devaraj had shared a health update on August 19, noting that the 94-year-old actress was undergoing treatment in the ICU. Following news of her death, Jr NTR wrote on X that "the news of the passing of Shaukaru Janaki Garu, who left her unique mark in Telugu and Indian cinema, has caused immense sorrow," and that "Janaki Garu's cinematic journey and the characters she portrayed will forever remain in our memories." Actress Kasturi also paid tribute on X, writing "Can't believe Sowcar Janaki gaaru is no more. What a spitfire she was ! 95 years young. We lose another legend."
Seven-decade career across South Indian cinema
Born Sankaramanchi Janaki, the actress acted in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema over a career that stretched from 1950 to 2023. She earned the title "Sowcar" after her breakthrough role in the 1950 Telugu film "Shavukaru," directed by LV Prasad, and went on to work with K. Balachandar in films including "Neerkumizhi," "Edhir Neechal," "Kaviya Thalaivi" and "Thillu Mullu." She shared the screen with leading men of the era including NTR, Sivaji Ganesan, MGR, Gemini Ganesan and Rajkumar, later reinventing herself as a grandmother and matriarch figure. Her last film appearance was in the 2023 Telugu movie "Anni Manchi Sakunamule," and her final television role was in the 2013 Telugu serial "Varudhini Parinayam."
Honours and family
The Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on Janaki in 2022 in recognition of her contribution to Indian art and cinema; she had also received the Kalaimamani and Nandi Awards. She is survived by three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sources differ on the age cited in tributes: while the family statement confirmed she was 94, actress Kasturi's X post referred to her as "95 years young."
Industry reaction and public viewing arrangements
Telugu film producers and members of the Tamil film industry, including Nassar and actors Soundararaja and Hemachandran, visited her during her hospitalization and led public mourning after her death. The arrangement of her remains at Teyampet from 5 pm on August 21 allowed the industry and fans a final opportunity to pay respects.
