India's largest iron ore miner, NMDC Ltd, recorded production of 53.15 million tonnes (MT) of iron ore in FY26, becoming the first Indian mining company to surpass 50 MT in a single year, according to Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee. Mukherjee, addressing employees and their families at the NMDC Corporate Office in Hyderabad on Independence Day, characterised the year as "truly historic" and called it a "watershed year" for the state-run company. Sales in FY26 stood at 50.23 MT, indicating that nearly all mined material was dispatched to buyers.

Q1 FY27 momentum and near-term target

Production growth has carried into the current fiscal, with Q1 FY27 output of 15.12 MT, a 26% increase over the corresponding quarter last year. Q1 sales were 11.73 MT and turnover reached Rs. 6,795 crore, up 2% year-on-year. Building on that start, Mukherjee set a target of 60 MT of iron ore production for FY27. The combined message from the FY26 record and the Q1 FY27 outturn is that NMDC is operating well above the 50 MT line that defined FY26, although the company has not disclosed the specific capex or capacity projects underpinning the 60 MT target.

2030 ambition and the path to 100 MT

Looking further ahead, Mukherjee outlined a long-term goal of 100 MT of iron ore production by 2030. Strategic initiatives to expand production capacity and improve operational efficiency were cited as the levers, but no mine-by-mine schedule, capex figure, or timeline for individual phases was provided in the address. The 100 MT target would represent an almost two-fold increase over the FY26 record within roughly five years.

Leadership context and the Independence Day setting

Mukherjee delivered the remarks on India's 80th Independence Day, framing NMDC's role in terms of mineral security, industrial growth and self-reliance. He was joined at the Corporate Office by Director (Technical) Vinay Kumar, Director (Production) Joydeep Dasgupta, Director (Personnel) Krishna Kumar Thakur, Director (Finance) Anurag Kapil, Director (Commercial) Vivek Nishant Nath and Chief Vigilance Officer C Neelakanta Reddy. The leadership's public appearance alongside the production record signals a coordinated communications effort around the milestone.

What remains to be clarified

The CMD's statement sets numerical milestones but leaves several verification points open. Detailed FY26 financials, segment-wise iron ore output by mine, and the specific capacity additions behind the 100 MT by 2030 aim were not disclosed in the available coverage. Whether the Q1 FY27 growth rate is sustainable across the full year, and how NMDC plans to manage logistics, pricing and environmental clearances at near-doubled output, are also not addressed.

Follow-up signals

The next verifiable milestone is NMDC's Q2 FY27 production and sales disclosure, which will indicate whether the 26% Q1 growth rate holds. Investors will also watch for any capex or expansion announcement tied to the 100 MT by 2030 target and for full-year FY27 guidance in the company's annual results.
