The mural and its location

Apple Music and United Record Pressing on September 14, 2026 unveiled a two-panel mural titled "This is Country Music" outside the Nashville pressing plant that historically served as a refuge for Black artists during segregation. The installation is positioned to mark the cultural footprint of Black musicians in the city where the genre is commercially headquartered, and advertising revenue generated from the mural will be donated toward the renovation and preservation of the Motown Suite.

Artist and the work itself

The mural was painted by Nashville-based artist, graphic designer and muralist Christian Green, also known as C3. Side A features portraits of Linda Martell and Charley Pride, recognized for breaking barriers for subsequent generations of country artists of color. Side B pays homage to the past, present and future of Black artists in country music, depicting vinyl records bearing the names of Kashus Culpepper, Tiera Kennedy, Ray Charles, Breland, Shaboozey, Rissi Palmer and Kane Brown, among others. Several vinyls have been intentionally left open as placeholders symbolizing future artists who will shape the genre.

Statements from collaborators

"I am truly honored and excited to team up with Apple Music on a mural that means so much to me," Green said, adding that he sought to capture not just the likeness of Pride and Martell but "the joy, the power, and the grit." Apple Music Country host Kelleigh Bannen said, "Black artists have been foundational to country music and this mural aims to highlight their legacy in the very heart of Nashville," and described the project as honoring the past, celebrating the present and leaving room for new artists carrying the genre forward.

Nashville's wider creative ecosystem

The mural's debut coincides with broader reporting on Nashville's evolving music scene, in which industry operators describe a distributed network of venues, rehearsal spaces and production studios that has replaced the traditional dominance of publishing houses and major label offices. Interviews with creators point to mentorship, peer collaboration and accessible technology as the principal engines moving artists from compact rehearsal rooms and small clubs to larger stages, with streaming data and social platforms providing real-time feedback outside traditional gatekeeping channels.

Venue demand and cross-genre programming

Venue operators in Nashville report that audiences now actively seek diverse lineups, with bookers willing to take chances on less established acts and programming folk singers, electronic producers and hip-hop collectives on shared bills. Independent labels have expanded their focus on niche audiences and hands-on artist development, while education programs at local institutions and private studios have added courses in production, A&R and digital distribution to shorten the path from training to professional work.

Follow-up signal

Proceeds from advertising associated with the mural are earmarked for the renovation and preservation of the Motown Suite at the United Record Pressing site, providing a measurable next milestone for the partnership.
