The Darkness records Masters of the Universe theme
The Darkness has recorded a new song titled "Masters of the Universe" for the upcoming Masters of the Universe film, leaning into a bombastic, retro-rock sound that the band has compared to Queen's Flash Gordon theme. The British rock group framed the collaboration as a mission statement, declaring: "When He-Man asked whether we could provide some music for his forthcoming biopic Masters of the Universe we dusted off our trusty loin cloths, assembled in the courtyard of Castle Darkness and bellowed in unison 'WE HAVE THE POWER.'"
Earlier collaboration with Brian May
The new theme is not the band's first involvement with the franchise. The Darkness previously released "Eternia," which featured a guest appearance from Queen's Brian May, signaling an ongoing creative partnership with the film's producers rather than a one-off single. The earlier release had already hinted at a soundtrack drawing on the retro-futuristic sound that defined the original 1980s cartoon.
UHF soundtrack gets first-ever vinyl release
Separately, composer John Du Prez's original score for the 1989 "Weird Al" Yankovic film UHF is being released on vinyl for the first time, coinciding with the film's 37th anniversary on July 21, 2026. Du Prez said he was "feeling over the moon" about the release, calling it "a dream come true," while Yankovic joked that he hoped the release would "usher in a new industry standard of soundtracks coming out 37 years after the movie." The score was originally produced on late-1989 synthesizers in Du Prez's private home studio and is described as a cinematic pastiche ranging from sweeping action-adventure themes to tense psychological-thriller textures.
Vinyl editions and collector packages
The release is being offered through Yankovic's boutique label Way Moby in three tiers. A Deluxe 2LP Album is priced at $65 and features limited-edition colored vinyl, a custom die-cut rigid slipcase, a 3D pop-up gatefold, and retro-designed faux UHF lobby cards. A Gold Edition Box Set at $135 adds a replica of the original UHF shooting script, mini-posters, promotional folders, an official T-shirt, and a custom enamel Twinkie Wiener Sandwich pin. A Platinum Edition Box Set at $325 includes a hand-signed liner note, a foil-stamped linen slipcase, a replica Orion Pictures Press Kit, a personalized Channel 62 Telethon Stock Certificate, and a Channel 62 Schedule Board Game.
Live screening and 4K reissue
Beyond the vinyl release, UHF will be screened with a live orchestra in Los Angeles on October 31, and a 4K Ultra HD edition of the film is currently available through Amazon.
