Taylor Swift is set to become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history during the 2026 VMAs in Los Angeles on September 27, after CBS and MTV announced she will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors. The new honor will give Swift her 31st VMA, breaking her tie with Beyoncé, who also holds 30 career wins according to the Associated Press. Swift's existing VMA collection includes awards tied to videos such as "Bad Blood," "You Need to Calm Down" and "All Too Well: The Short Film."

The inaugural Artist Director Honors

The Artist Director Honors is a newly created category, separate from this year's competitive awards. The official announcement describes it as recognizing "groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video," honoring a "sustained and influential body of work" and a distinct directorial voice. VMA producer Bruce Gillmer told AP Entertainment that the honor is "an extension of the [Video] Vanguard [Award], and in many ways, even larger in stature," and that the idea originated externally. Gillmer added that after extensive deliberation about the first recipient, "right away, you see Taylor. Multiple nominations for director."

Swift's 2026 nominations

Swift enters the ceremony with nine nominations, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Pop for "The Fate of Ophelia." Madonna leads this year's nominations with 11. The nominations underscore the directorial body of work cited as the basis for the new honor.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards air live at 7:30 PM ET and 4:30 PM PT on September 27. Swift's record-breaking 31st win via the Artist Director Honors will be confirmed when the honor is presented during the Los Angeles ceremony.
