Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, the president of Paris Saint-Germain and chairman of the European Football Clubs group, told reporters in Copenhagen on Tuesday that he will not be a candidate in the FIFA presidential election, ending weeks of speculation that European soccer might rally behind him to challenge Gianni Infantino. "I have zero interest in FIFA, zero agenda (or) ambition to be there," Al-Khelaïfi said at a news conference after the European Football Clubs annual meeting. "I don't think I'm the right guy for this position and I don't want to go actually, I'm enjoying what I'm doing." The PSG boss, who also serves on the UEFA executive committee, added, "I think FIFA's not for me. Thank you."
His standing in the European game
Al-Khelaïfi leads the 900-member European Football Clubs organization and remains chairman of Champions League title holder PSG, giving him one of the more prominent voices in European soccer governance. He also sits on the UEFA executive committee, the body whose president, Aleksander Ceferin, is leading efforts to unseat Infantino before or at the March 18 election in Morocco.
Qatar factor and political backdrop
Al-Khelaïfi's profile had drawn attention beyond Europe because he is a minister in the government of Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup. Qatar has so far supported Infantino, a factor that analysts suggested could broaden Al-Khelaïfi's appeal with FIFA voters in Asia. His decision to stay out of the race removes a potential bridge between UEFA-aligned European clubs and the Asian and Gulf voting blocs ahead of the candidate deadline.
Election timeline and what changes
FIFA candidates must formally enter the race about seven weeks before the vote, putting the deadline in mid-February 2027 for the March 18, 2027 election in Morocco. With Al-Khelaïfi out, UEFA's search for a candidate to oppose Infantino continues, while the European Football Clubs meeting in Copenhagen took place two months after Infantino's multi-billion-dollar subsidiary plan was revealed and then defeated within days.
