Cantillo and the bullpen deliver the milestone

The victory came after Cleveland dropped Friday's series opener 7-5 on a night when starter Gavin Williams logged his shortest outing of the season, underscoring the team's recent difficulty playing complementary baseball. Manager Stephen Vogt said Saturday's performance reflected what the club had been searching for, noting that the pitching, bullpen work and baserunning all came together. The result improved Cleveland to 60-64 on the season, ending a stretch in which the Guardians had gone 9-18 since the All-Star break and lost five of their previous six games.

Ramírez and Kwan drive the offense

José Ramírez delivered one of his strongest games since undergoing surgery to remove his left hamate bone on June 16, collecting his first extra-base hit since the operation with a double and adding a sacrifice fly after being given Friday off. Steven Kwan contributed a run-scoring double in a four-run fifth and later was credited with a stolen base of home in the seventh, capping the scoring. Cleveland piled up 11 hits and five doubles without hitting a home run, with Kwan, Chase DeLauter and Jo Adell each recording two hits.

Playoff race still tight

Cleveland remained one game behind the Texas Rangers for the final AL Wild Card spot entering Sunday, with four teams between them in the standings. The Padres, who had won six straight and 16 of 20 since July 24, were cooled by Cantillo in his first outing in six days after his previous start against the White Sox was cut short by a two-hour, 23-minute rain delay. San Diego's Casey Mize was set to face Cleveland's Tanner Bibee in the series finale.

Injury note and next step

Reliever Colin Holderman, who had struggled in the second half, left the game with a trainer, raising a roster question for Cleveland heading into the finale. The series wraps up Sunday at 1:40 p.m. ET with Bibee scheduled to start for the Guardians against Mize, who was making his third start since being acquired in a trade.
