Opening-round leader and chasing pack

Filipino-American Mariel Galdiano holds a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Standard Portland Classic at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Oregon. Galdiano's position at the top of the leaderboard frames the chase heading into the second round of the LPGA Tour event.
Pagdanganan's challenge from the morning groups
Bianca Pagdanganan of the Philippines matched the best opening rounds of the morning and sits tied for second, one stroke behind Galdiano. Playing on a conditional LPGA Tour invitation, Pagdanganan posted a six-under 66 highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole. She birdied all four par-5s and two of the four par-3s, pairing her power off the tee with sharp iron play and steady work around the greens, after making the turn in 33 on her opening back nine.
Crowded leaderboard at the top
Pagdanganan's 66 puts her level with Arpichaya Yubol, Olivia Cowan, Grace Kim, Hye Jin Choi and Lauren Walsh in a tie for second, one shot back of Galdiano. The grouping reflects a tightly bunched leaderboard after day one, with multiple contenders within striking distance of the lead.
Tournament stakes and next test
Pagdanganan is using the Portland event as a tune-up for next week's Wildhorse Golf Classic in Pendleton, Oregon, on the Epson Tour, carrying momentum from her opening 66 into that developmental circuit stop. The Standard Portland Classic continues with subsequent rounds at Columbia Edgewater, where the leaderboard is expected to compress as later groups complete their first rounds.
