Dabang Delhi TTC secured the fourth and final semifinal berth in Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) Season 7 with a 10-5 victory over PBG Pune Jaguars at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Panaji, Goa on July 24, 2026. The former champions sealed qualification through captain Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, who defeated Snehit Suravajjula in three games once Delhi needed nine wins to advance. Earlier, Omar Assar had given Pune the lead by winning an all-Egyptian clash against Youssef Abdelaziz in three games, but Delhi responded with three successive match victories to take control of the tie. Snehit Suravajjula's third-game win ensured Delhi could not climb above fourth place in the league standings.

Semifinal lineup set

Dabang Delhi will face unbeaten league-phase leaders Dempo Goa Challengers in the first semifinal scheduled for July 25, 2026. HVR Kolkata ThunderBlades will meet defending champions U Mumba TT in the second semifinal a day later. Sathiyan was named both the ChatGPT MatchIQ Player and Indian Player of the Tie after leading Delhi into the final four, while Maria Xiao, who swept aside Prithika Pavade in straight games and partnered Sathiyan to win the mixed doubles against Anirban Ghosh and Diya Chitale, claimed the Foreign Player of the Tie award. Pavade earned the Bisleri Shot of the Tie honour. Diya Chitale signed off Pune's campaign with a hard-fought victory over Sutirtha Mukherjee in the closing women's singles.

Controversy over 'Obstruction of Play' ruling

The closing women's singles produced a flashpoint when, with the score at 10-10 in the second game and Diya Chitale serving for the Golden Point, Sutirtha Mukherjee called for a Table Tennis Review (TTR) before the ball left Diya's palm. Competition Director Jigar Rambhia ruled that because the receiving player spoke before the ball was released, the point should be awarded to the serving player under the obstruction-of-play rule, and the Table Tennis Review itself was never triggered. The ruling left Delhi captain Sathiyan visibly frustrated, with the international paddler telling reporters that he had never seen a point awarded for obstruction at such a crucial juncture and questioning whether a near-simultaneous TTR call should be treated as distraction. Pune's foreign coach Julien Girard suggested Sutirtha had appealed because of concerns Diya could hide the ball during her service motion.

Reactions and the future of the TTR system

Rambhia, who was overseeing the TTR system in his debut UTT season, described the review mechanism as an overall success but said the league would examine adding further situations that could fall under its scope. Sathiyan argued that the rules should clarify whether calling a TTR a split second early can be considered a distraction, saying officials must decide whether to check the TTR or replay the point in such cases. Girard accepted the outcome pragmatically, noting that Pune were already out of semifinal contention and that Delhi had led 10-4 in the tie at the moment of the disputed point.

UTT framed as Asian Games preparation

Speaking ahead of the decisive tie, Sathiyan described the UTT as ideal preparation for India's national team ahead of the upcoming Asian Games, citing the team atmosphere and the opportunity to field the same men's and mixed doubles pairs that will compete at the multi-sport event. The former World No. 24 said the volume of matches in UTT Season 7, combined with the tournament run-in toward the Commonwealth Championship, would leave the squad in strong condition. UTT Season 7 features 42 players from around the world, including 14 Olympians, and is staged under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
