Wrigley Field hosts inaugural Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge

Wrigley Field, the historic Major League Baseball home of the Chicago Cubs, staged its first collegiate volleyball matches on Sunday as the inaugural Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge concluded with a Chicago doubleheader. The event featured No. 3 Kentucky against No. 13 Penn State, followed by No. 1 Nebraska against Missouri, and was broadcast on FOX as part of the conference's showcase week. ABC7 Chicago reported that every school in both conferences participated in the week-long challenge, with the marquee finale reserved for the Friendly Confines.
Kentucky opens the doubleheader with a four-set win
Outside hitter Brooklyn DeLeye recorded 21 kills to lead No. 3 Kentucky past No. 13 Penn State 3-1 in the first-ever collegiate volleyball match played at Wrigley Field. The Wildcats took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21, dropped the third 23-25, then closed out the match 25-15 in the fourth. Kentucky improved to 5-1, while Penn State fell to 3-1. The Wildcats navigated 11 mph winds blowing off Lake Michigan in the opening set, which produced 10 ties and four lead changes before Kentucky rallied from a 22-21 deficit behind consecutive DeLeye kills.
Setter Kassie O'Brien distributed a season-high 48 assists, and three Wildcats finished in double-digit kills: DeLeye with 21, Morgan Gaerte with 15, and Asia Thigpen with 11. Libero Molly Tuozzo anchored the back row with a match-high 19 digs, while Gaerte and middle blocker Lizzie Carr each contributed six blocks. Kentucky head coach Craig Skinner told the Fox Sports broadcast team that the Wrigley event ranked at the top of anything he has been part of, calling it "a cool moment for everybody." Forward Georgia Watson, who grew up less than 50 miles from the ballpark, delivered the clinching kill in the final set.
Court conditions force suspension of Nebraska-Missouri
The second match of the doubleheader was halted in the first set with Nebraska leading 11-7 over Missouri and ultimately suspended when Big Ten officials determined the outdoor court was too dangerous to continue. Per the announcement made to the crowd, the match cannot be rescheduled at Wrigley Field, and a decision on whether to continue the contest elsewhere will be announced later. Player safety was cited as the overriding concern.
Condensation on the playing surface had repeatedly interrupted play earlier in the evening. Players from both teams slipped on the court, including Nebraska opposite Virginia Adriano, setter Bergen Reilly and libero Olivia Mauch, as well as Missouri's Ainoah Cruz. Coaches Dani Busboom-Kelly of Nebraska and Dawn Sullivan of Missouri intervened with mops, alcohol-soaked towels, ripped-up floor decals, and leaf blowers to dry the surface, producing multiple delays before officials declared the conditions unplayable. During the stoppages, players from both sides engaged the largely Nebraska-filled crowd of 43,067 in singalongs and dance-offs, including the Cupid Shuffle.
Nebraska players address the crowd after suspension
Following the public-address announcement of the suspension, Nebraska players Harper Murray, Laney Choboy, Andi Jackson and Bergen Reilly, with Reilly visibly emotional, took the microphone to apologize to the fans. The gesture drew a supportive response from the crowd inside the ballpark, which had been transformed from its usual baseball configuration into an outdoor volleyball venue for the day.
What's next
Kentucky returns home Wednesday to host North Carolina at 6 p.m. CT on the SEC Network in the ACC-SEC Challenge. The suspended Nebraska-Missouri match awaits a decision on whether and where play can resume, after a Monday contingency was raised during the stoppage but not confirmed by event organizers.
