John Mateer Throws Three Touchdowns as No. 10 Oklahoma Shuts Out UTEP 51-0

Mateer paces the offense in three-touchdown outing

Quarterback John Mateer, a fifth-year player, completed 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns in No. 10 Oklahoma's 51-0 victory over UTEP at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Friday night in Norman. Mateer's first pass was off target to Elijah Thomas, but he settled in quickly, completing his next seven throws, including three completions of 24 or more yards and another for 15 yards. He missed on four of his last six attempts before giving way to backup Whitt Newbauer late in the third quarter. Newbauer led a touchdown drive and scored from three yards out to make it 51-0 early in the fourth quarter, and Bowe Bentley also saw action as Oklahoma emptied the bench.

Special teams sets the tone with Sategna's return

Special teams delivered the game's signature play when Isaiah Sategna returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter, Oklahoma's first punt return for a score since Gavin Freeman's return against Arkansas State in the 2023 opener and the Sooners' longest since Jalen Saunders' 92-yarder in 2013. Sategna finished with 115 punt return yards and added a 24-yard kickoff return, while UTEP missed all three of its field-goal attempts. Oklahoma did not have to punt until late in the game, finishing with 42 yards of net punting from Jacob Ulrich on the late attempt.

Run game and receivers show depth beyond the scoreboard

Running back Lloyd Avant, a transfer from Colorado State, broke off a 12-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage and a 13-yard gain on the next, giving Oklahoma its first runs longer than 10 yards in a season opener since the prior year and getting the bulk of the carries. Tight end Rocky Beers leaped over UTEP's Justin Content on a first-half touchdown catch, and the Sooners spread completions across multiple targets while Mateer was efficient without carrying the rushing attack.

Defensive lapses and a late turnover temper the shutout

The Sooners' 51-0 result did not come without blemishes. Defensive play was described as sloppy in places, the offensive line showed uneven play in a patchwork configuration, and Oklahoma committed a turnover late that severely threatened the scoreboard before the shutout was preserved. Despite those issues, UTEP was held off the scoreboard entirely.

Next test awaits against No. 16 Michigan

Oklahoma's schedule stiffens immediately, with a road game at No. 16 Michigan next on the docket after the opening win. The matchup will be the first significant measure of whether the defensive and offensive-line concerns from the opener carry over against a ranked opponent.
