Dual-code international winger Mark Nawaqanitawase scored two tries as the Sydney Roosters edged the Newcastle Knights 19-18 in the National Rugby League final on Sunday, securing the foundation club a 16th title. The contest drew a crowd of 80,814 at Stadium Australia, with Nawaqanitawase crossing either side of halftime to help overturn an early Newcastle advantage.

Newcastle's fast start erased before the break

The Knights struck first through Francis Manuleleua and captain Kalyn Ponga to open a 12-0 lead, chasing their first title since 2001. Nawaqanitawase cut the deficit five minutes before the break with a clever kick and chase, ending Newcastle's early dominance. The opening period set up a tense finish as the Knights carried momentum from their week before the Grand Final, having famously upset Penrith with 12 players.

Smith try and Walker penalty shift the momentum

Roosters center Billy Smith forced his way over in the 47th minute for a converted try that leveled the scores at 12-12, after Newcastle defended several sets on their own line to start the second half. Sam Walker put the Sydney side in front for the first time with a penalty seven minutes later, and Nawaqanitawase added his second try in the right corner before the hour mark to extend the lead to 18-12.

Cherry-Evans field goal seals the lead before late Knights rally

Experienced five-eighth Daly Cherry-Evans, playing his last NRL game before a move to England's Super League, slotted a field goal to extend the advantage to seven points with 11 minutes remaining. Winger Greg Marzhew then crossed for a converted try that made it a one-point game with four minutes on the clock. The Roosters, one of the two clubs remaining from the first season of what became the NRL in 1908, held on to secure their first title since 2019 and fourth under long-term coach Trent Robinson.

Player reaction and aftermath

Nawaqanitawase, playing the final game of his two-year stint at the Roosters before his return to rugby union, said credit belonged to the Knights for fighting for the full 80 minutes. "This is going to last me a lifetime, it's sad to go but I love everyone here, I love all the boys, and let's celebrate this win, far out," he said after the match.

Separately, Irish electronics firm Ei Electronics confirmed a five-year sponsorship agreement with Munster Rugby on October 4, with the Ei Electronics logo to feature on Munster's kit under the new partnership. The agreement extends through the 2030-31 season.
