Neeraj Chopra Qualifies for Diamond League Finals After Limited Season

Qualification from Sixth Place

Neeraj Chopra secured a berth in the Diamond League Finals scheduled for Brussels on September 4 and 5, finishing sixth in the men's javelin standings with 12 points after the final standings were updated following the Zurich meeting on Thursday. The top six athletes in the men's javelin standings qualify for the Finals, and Chopra earned his points through a second-place finish in Doha on June 19 and another second-place finish in Lausanne on August 21.

Limited Appearances and Injury Recovery

Chopra competed in only two of the five Diamond League meetings that featured men's javelin this season, out of 14 total Diamond League meetings held. His restricted schedule was due to recovery from a lower back injury that had troubled him since September of the previous year, which delayed his return until the Doha meeting. He was not fully fit at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver medal with a season-best throw of 85.83 meters, and later improved that mark to 88.05 meters at the Lausanne Diamond League.

Final Field and Prize Structure

The men's javelin final is scheduled for September 5 in Brussels. The winner of each event will receive a trophy and at least USD 30,000 in prize money, while the eighth-place finisher will receive USD 1,000. If men's javelin is selected as one of the Diamond+ disciplines, the winner's prize will increase to USD 60,000. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage finished at the top of the standings with 39 points after competing in all five Diamond League javelin events and heads into the Finals as the form athlete following a winning throw of 92.07 meters in Zurich.
