The Apex as Nike's New Pinnacle Marathon Shoe

Thrilling night baseball game at Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Japan with vibrant crowd.

Nike introduced the Apex on September 30, 2026, positioning it as the new top of the brand's race-day lineup and describing it as "one of the biggest leaps we've ever made in marathon racing." The shoe sits above the recently released Alphafly 4 and is framed as the Swoosh's most efficient racing system to date, aimed at runners chasing faster marathon times.

Energy Return and Weight Figures

According to Nike, the Apex delivers up to 40 percent more energy return than the Alphafly 3, a gain well above the roughly 10 percent improvement the Alphafly 4 posted over its predecessor. The Apex is also more than 10 percent lighter than the Alphafly 3 in a men's size 10, compared with about a 5 percent weight reduction on the Alphafly 4.

Air Zoom, Foam and Plate Architecture

The Apex's defining feature is a forefoot Air Zoom configuration built from two stacked pairs of Air units, totaling four bubbles and the most Air Nike has ever placed in the forefoot of a running shoe. Surrounding those units is ZoomX LT, a new race-specific foam that is softer, lighter and more responsive than standard ZoomX, while a redesigned inverse-wave carbon fiber plate channels loading into the Air system and aids propulsion. The shoe uses a zero-drop geometry that reaches the 40 mm stack-height limit permitted under current World Athletics-style racing rules at both heel and forefoot.

Outsole Technology and Upper Construction

Two outsole systems appear on the Apex. GOATEK, a traction technology developed for extreme mountain racing and slated for the upcoming ACG Picklejus, is used on the Apex and is said to deliver about 45 percent better traction than previous Nike ACG outsoles, with strategic placement to keep weight in check. Fast Shot rubber is also used, and weight is further trimmed by removing the sock liner in favor of a Flyknit X upper.

Positioning in the Super-Shoe Market

Nike is presenting the Apex as a response to intensifying competition from brands such as adidas, which has logged a string of marathon podiums and has introduced footwear with its own adaptive features. The launch comes less than two weeks after the Alphafly 4 release and signals Nike's intent to redefine the super-shoe category the company helped create nearly a decade ago, with executives calling Apex the brand's effort to "raise the stakes" in the marathon racing arms race.

Availability and Next Milestone

The Apex is scheduled to arrive in stores in January 2027. Pricing and full retail launch details were not provided in the September 30 announcements. The next verifiable milestone is the shoe's in-store release window in January 2027, alongside the separately planned debut of GOATEK on the ACG Picklejus line later in 2027.
