Russell controls Baku from pole to chequered flag

George Russell led every lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, converting pole position into his third win of the 2026 Formula 1 season. He crossed the line 0.196 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, the narrowest margin in years. After a qualifying lap more than eight tenths clear of the field, Russell controlled the race through two safety-car restarts before withstanding a last-lap charge from Verstappen that nearly closed the gap on the run to the line. A late crash by Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas had earlier forced both leaders to back off before Verstappen hunted Russell down in the final sector.

Antonelli limits damage after qualifying crash

Kimi Antonelli's championship lead shrank from 81 points to 66 after he recovered from a 16th-place grid start, the result of a Q1 crash, to finish fifth. The Italian avoided the first-lap three-car collision that eliminated McLaren's Lando Norris, then benefited from Oscar Piastri's late off-track excursion while defending third place, which dropped the Australian to 15th. Antonelli also passed teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished sixth, on his way to limiting the points loss.

Verstappen's recovery and Red Bull podium return

Max Verstappen started eighth after qualifying was complicated by Red Bull power-unit and energy-deployment problems, then charged through the field. He passed Piastri for second and pushed Russell to within two tenths at the flag. The result leaves Verstappen without a win in 2026, a drought not seen since his 2015 rookie season. His Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar completed the podium on his return from a wrist fracture that had kept him out of the previous three races.

Ferrari and McLaren leave Baku empty-handed

Charles Leclerc took fourth from second on the grid, while Ferrari lacked the race pace to challenge the top three, and Hamilton was sixth. Defending champion Norris was eliminated on the opening lap when Franco Colapinto crashed into his own Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, triggering the three-car incident Antonelli avoided. Piastri's off-track moment while defending third compounded McLaren's collapse from third and fourth on the grid to 14th and 15th at the flag. Arvid Lindblad took seventh for Racing Bulls, with Esteban Ocon eighth for Haas.

Tightened title fight with nine rounds remaining

Russell framed the result as a turning point in the drivers' standings, calling it "crunch time" against a teammate he described as having had "an incredible season" and "pretty flawless" form earlier in the year. The 15-point swing keeps Antonelli ahead but hands momentum to Russell heading into the remaining rounds. The next race on the calendar will determine whether Russell's Baku form carries forward or whether Antonelli can reassert the margin he built during the first three quarters of the season.
