Tanvi Patri captured the girls' singles U17 title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships in Chengdu, China, on Sunday, recovering from a game down to defeat fellow Indian Shaina Manimuthu 11-15, 15-10, 15-12 in 46 minutes. The 15-year-old from Odisha, seeded second, became only the second Indian to win the U17 Asian crown after Diksha Sudhakar's 2025 breakthrough. By pairing the U17 title with her 2024 U15 Asian championship, Patri also became the first Indian shuttler to hold both junior continental singles titles.
Draw path built on three Chinese opponents and one Japanese test
Patri opened with a first-round bye before edging China's Zhou Jing Li 18-16, 12-15, 15-13 in a three-game battle. She followed with a 15-9, 15-12 win over Japan's Shizuku Kashio, then overwhelmed China's Lin Heng Men 15-8, 15-8 in the quarterfinals. The semifinal against China's Yu Ying Gui went the distance again, with Patri advancing 15-9, 11-15, 15-11, logging roughly 204 minutes of match play across the tournament.
Manimuthu and Indian U15 doubles duo round out the medal haul
Sixth-seeded Manimuthu, the reigning Asian U15 champion, defeated Japan's Yui Itabashi in the quarterfinals and Japan's Anon Okimoto 15-13, 15-12 in the semifinals before falling to Patri and settling for silver. In the U15 category, Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma took bronze in boys' doubles after a 5-15, 10-15 semifinal loss to Chinese Taipei's Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Hou, giving India its only other podium finish of the day.
Form built on early China training and a senior breakthrough
Patri began playing in Kunshan, China, where her family was based, and credits Chinese coaches Jiang Yong Yi, Zhang Lei and Wu with her early development before she returned to India in 2020. She now trains at the Center for Badminton Excellence in Bengaluru. The Chengdu title arrives weeks after Patri won her first senior international crown at the Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia and added the All India Junior U19 ranking title in Bengaluru earlier in 2026.
