WTA Finals to move to Charlotte from 2027 on three-year deal

The Women's Tennis Association will stage its season-ending WTA Finals in Charlotte, North Carolina, for at least three years beginning in 2027, with the tournament to be played at the city's Spectrum Centre, an NBA arena that is home to the Charlotte Hornets. Chair Valerie Camillo said the move gives the tour greater direct control of its flagship event, and a fan festival is planned at the nearby convention center. The agreement covers editions in 2027, 2028 and 2029.

Public-Private Partnership Structure

Camillo described the new arrangement as a public-private partnership involving the city, county, state and local corporate community, and said the WTA itself will operate the Finals rather than rely on an outside-promoter model. "The WTA will be taking greater ownership and control of the event and investing alongside our partners," Camillo told reporters this week, adding that the tour wanted to build the Finals into the "Super Bowl of women's sports." Financial terms of Charlotte's package were not disclosed ahead of a planned announcement by local partners, though Camillo said it represented a "meaningful investment" that gave the WTA confidence to commit.

Financial Pressures Behind the Move

The decision follows the WTA's relocation of the November 2026 Finals to Indian Wells, California, after ending an agreement under which Riyadh had hosted the event with backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Internal projections reported by The Telegraph last week indicated the tour could run out of cash next year and slide into debt by autumn 2027 if its current spending pattern continued, with expected 2026 operating losses of $23 million and the loss of Saudi-linked revenue cited as a major contributor. Camillo called 2026 a transitional year, said the tour was tightening spending while absorbing the unexpected cost of moving the 2026 Finals, and argued that relocating to Indian Wells was a strategic step that would lay groundwork for the Charlotte plan.

Prize Money and Equal Pay Status

The WTA has not yet set prize money for the 2027 Finals, and Camillo said equal prize money remained an important issue, without providing a timeline. She said the tour had a "clear path" to consistent and sustainable financial performance from 2027, supported by revenue and audience growth, and framed the Charlotte commitment as central to that plan.
