Anthropic folds Claude Cowork into Claude chat, debuts Claude Docs and Claude Slides

Merging Cowork into a single Claude interface

Anthropic said on September 16, 2026 that it is ending Claude Cowork as a distinct product and folding its capabilities into the main Claude chatbot, eliminating the toggle that forced users to choose between a conversational exchange and a longer-running agentic workspace. In announcement materials quoted by VentureBeat, the company said, "We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work," adding that users "told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged." Going forward, Claude will decide on its own when a conversation should expand into a multi-step project, drawing on context, skills and connectors as needed. Users who previously worked inside Cowork keep their chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills, and the Cowork name itself is set to disappear over time.

Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta

Alongside the consolidation, Anthropic launched Claude Docs, a collaborative document product, and Claude Slides, a native presentation builder, both in beta, and brought Claude Design into any chat session. VentureBeat reported that Claude Docs is a new document-authoring product, distinct from the developer documentation site that carried the same name until September 2025; Claude Slides is separate from the earlier Claude for PowerPoint add-in, which received a major update in March 2026. According to ua.news, citing The Verge, Claude Docs will work much like Google Docs, starting private and letting users grant access for simultaneous editing, with comments left by co-authors and by Claude. Anything created with Claude Design, Slides or Docs will be reachable through a single sharing link that opens on a phone.

Rollout to Pro, Max and beyond

Anthropic said the changes will begin rolling out to Claude Pro and Max subscribers across web, desktop and mobile in the coming weeks, with Team and Free plans to follow. On desktop, Claude can already reach local files and use the host computer's browser, and that capability is preserved as it becomes part of the default Claude experience. The shift effectively retires one of the most visible distinctions inside Anthropic's flagship application: whether the user is simply chatting with Claude or handing it a job to execute.

Separately, The Verge, as summarized by ua.news, noted that the new Docs and Slides tools narrow the gap between Claude and Google's office suite, where Gemini has been adding document editing, presentation generation and in-app chat inside Docs, Sheets and Slides. An Economic Times synopsis confirmed Anthropic's announcement that it is combining Claude's chat and Cowork features into one interface and releasing new document and presentation tools on the same day.
