A crafted SVG submitted to Bing's image search executed commands as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM on Microsoft's production image-processing workers and as root on the Linux machines in the same fleet, according to a report published on July 24. Security researchers at XBOW reproduced the result across workers on different hosts, extending the impact of the vulnerability beyond Windows and into the Linux portion of Microsoft's image-processing infrastructure.

The same report referenced Axis Communications' effort to make every one of its cameras capable of easily running Linux applications, a direction that would broaden the install base of Linux on cameras and, if similar embedded-secret practices persist, the corresponding attack surface.
