The University of Vermont Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) has announced a new Biotechnology Technician Certificate, a workforce development program designed to prepare career changers for entry-level roles in the region's pharmaceutical, biomanufacturing, and research sectors. The program is offered at no cost to participants, with tuition covered through congressional funding, and no prior science degree is required for enrollment.

According to the university, the certificate spans eight months and asks participants for seven to 10 hours per week, combining asynchronous online coursework with in-person labs at UVM research facilities. UVM separately characterized the length of the program as a 24-week curriculum. Graduates are to receive a certificate and to develop a portfolio to share with prospective employers.

Curriculum and faculty leadership

The certificate is led by faculty from UVM's Larner College of Medicine, which the university identifies as a Carnegie "R1" research institution and the seventh-oldest medical school in the country. Curriculum covers lab safety and standard operating procedures, core bench techniques, data analysis using tools such as Excel and GraphPad Prism, and molecular biology methods, including chromatography, microscopy, sterile technique, and DNA work.

Gerry Herrera, Ph.D., program director and assistant professor of pharmacology at the Larner College of Medicine, said the program's defining feature is that "students don't just learn techniques in a classroom, they work alongside researchers in a real UVM lab from day one." Students in the program train hands-on in a UVM research lab from the start of the certificate.

Federal funding and regional workforce aims

The program is funded through $2.7 million secured by U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development, Energy, and Credit, as part of a package of nearly $31 million for 27 Vermont projects. Kirk Dombrowski, UVM's vice president for research and economic development, framed the effort as "strengthening the entire regional life sciences ecosystem while living out our land grant mission to open doors across our state."

UVM PACE indicated it is also developing additional certificates to expand training pathways in the life sciences beyond the inaugural biotechnology offering.

Other developments

Separately, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reported that the inaugural cohort of its Biotechnology Regulatory Fellows presented their capstone projects, marking the close of that program's first cohort cycle.

Next milestones

UVM PACE is expected to open applications for the inaugural Biotechnology Technician Certificate cohort and to release additional details on the supplementary life-sciences certificates now under development.
