Subscription Pause After Demand Surge

Moonshot AI, the Chinese artificial intelligence startup behind the Kimi assistant, paused new subscriptions to its Kimi K3 model after two days of surging demand pushed its GPU resources close to full capacity, according to a Sunday post on X reported by Business Insider. The company said existing subscribers are unaffected and that it will gradually reopen new signups in batches as it expands infrastructure to ensure service quality for current members.
Model Profile and Open-Source Release
Kimi K3 launched around July 16 as an open-weight model with approximately 2.8 trillion parameters, a 1-million-token context window, and native multimodal capabilities, according to BeInCrypto. Full model weights are scheduled for public release on July 27. Third-party evaluator Arena ranked K3 first for building web interfaces, ahead of rival frontier models from several leading American and Chinese labs.
Pricing and Analyst Reception
Moonshot priced Kimi K3 at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, the highest of any Chinese model to date, according to Bank of America analyst Alex Liu cited by the Chosun Ilbo. The model scored 57 points on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, narrowing the gap with US frontier systems. Morgan Stanley analyst Gary Yu described the release as evidence that Chinese large language models are "comprehensively catching up" to US leaders on scale, performance, and pricing, while Bernstein's Robin Zhu called the model a "home run."
Semiconductor Market Reaction
The Kimi K3 release triggered sharp moves across global semiconductor stocks on July 17, with the Nasdaq Composite falling 1.40 percent to 25,520.24, the S&P 500 dropping 1.01 percent to 7,457.69, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 0.77 percent to 52,146.42, according to the Chosun Ilbo. TSMC shares fell 7.3 percent, while Nvidia lost 2.2 percent, Applied Materials 5.6 percent, Intel 2 percent, and SanDisk 4 percent. Asian markets also sold off, with Taiwan's Taiex down 6.5 percent and Japan's Nikkei 225 off 4 percent.
Membership Restructuring and IPO Path
Moonshot split its membership plans into two tiers: a general plan covering Kimi Web, App, and Work, and a separate Kimi Code Membership aimed at programming workflows, according to BeInCrypto. The company reported $300 million in annual recurring revenue in June, driven largely by API demand, with its valuation surpassing $20 billion in May and ongoing negotiations that could push it past $30 billion. Moonshot has also sent shareholders a resolution to pursue a possible Hong Kong initial public offering within roughly six months.
