Scribe Therapeutics prices upsized IPO at high end of range

Scribe Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company based in Alameda, California, priced its upsized initial public offering on July 23, 2026 at $15.00 per share, the top of its marketed range. The company is selling 8,580,000 shares of common stock, generating expected gross proceeds of approximately $128.7 million before underwriting discounts and expenses. Shares are listed on Nasdaq under the ticker "SCTX." Scribe develops in vivo CRISPR-based therapies aimed at disease prevention and durable therapeutic intervention, and has granted underwriters a 30-day option to purchase additional shares.
Patient death in China gene-editing trial draws regulatory scrutiny
A six-year-old girl with a neurodevelopmental genetic mutation died days after receiving an experimental base-editing therapy at Shanghai Xinhua Hospital in March 2025, according to a joint investigation by Science and Retraction Watch reported on July 24, 2026. The death was not disclosed in a Nature paper published earlier in 2026 that detailed animal studies of the same treatment, and that paper omitted kidney and liver issues observed in prior monkey experiments. Shanghai Xinhua Hospital was fined roughly US$3,600 for failures in the trial, the responsible physician received verbal counselling, and the child's parents—who contributed about US$860,000 to the research—were offered no compensation. The case has focused attention on investigator-initiated trials in China, which grew eleven-fold between 2015 and 2023 to exceed 1,000 studies, and on revised June 2026 regulations that restrict advanced cell and gene therapy trials to designated hospitals and bar institutions from charging patients research-related fees.
University of Washington launches AI drug delivery institute
The University of Washington School of Pharmacy opened the Institute for Innovations in Drug Delivery and Disposition, known as I2D3, in July 2026 to apply artificial intelligence to the optimization phase of drug development, where roughly 90% of candidates historically fail. Salk and Arc Institute publish single-cell atlas of genome architecture and methylation
Scientists at the Salk Institute and the Arc Institute, working with NIH-funded collaborators, released the first body-wide single-cell atlas mapping three-dimensional genome folding and DNA methylation simultaneously in the same cells, covering 86,689 cells across 16 human tissues. Published in Science and Science Advances as part of the NIH 4D Nucleome program, the resource identifies more than 1.36 million differentially methylated regions and 283,606 differential chromatin loops, linking disease-associated genetic variants to specific cell types, including atrial fibrillation variants in heart muscle cells and schizophrenia variants in excitatory neurons. The atlas also challenges prior assumptions about non-CG methylation, showing it carries cell-identity information across multiple non-brain tissues, and includes a public browser backed by 195 billion methylation measurements and 18 billion chromatin contacts.
Japan advances pig-to-human kidney xenotransplantation
Japanese biotechnology startup PorMedTec and Shonan Kamakura General Hospital announced on July 21, 2026 that they have begun breeding genetically modified pigs for Japan's first clinical trial of pig-to-human kidney transplants, with the study potentially beginning as early as 2028. PorMedTec, a Meiji University spinoff, imports cells from US-based eGenesis and uses cloning to produce donor pigs carrying 69 genetic modifications intended to reduce rejection and limit transmission of porcine viruses.
