Qwen Audio Tops Speech Synthesis Leaderboard
Alibaba's Qwen-Audio-3.0-TTS-Plus took the number one position on the Artificial Analysis Speech Arena Leaderboard with an Elo rating of 1,236 from 1,305 blind user evaluations, edging out SpeechifyAI's Simba 3.2 by two points. Google Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS ranked third at 1,214, with Cartesia Sonic 3.5 and Inworld Realtime TTS-2 Research Preview completing the top five. The model, launched in July 2026 and offered via Alibaba Cloud's API, provides eight distinct voices at $27.6 per million characters. Alibaba's Tongyi Lab had previously placed its Fun-Realtime-TTS model in the global top five in May 2026, with the new ranking continuing an upward trajectory for the group's text-to-speech work.
Apple Explores Compressed Qwen for On-Device AI
PrismML, a Khosla Ventures-backed spinout from the California Institute of Technology, released compressed versions of Alibaba's open-source Qwen model that it said could run all 27 billion parameters on an iPhone 15 or newer. The company reduced the model from roughly 54 GB to under 4 GB, claiming 10 to 15 times less memory use, six to eight times faster response generation and three to six times lower energy consumption. CEO Babak Hassibi told CNBC that Apple and other companies were evaluating the technology, calling the discussions early but said things were progressing nicely. The release came one day after Apple opened the public beta of iOS 27 and its long-delayed Siri overhaul, and analysts cautioned that the claims still need to be tested at scale. PrismML raised a $16.25 million seed round in March and plans to release a compressed version of Google's Gemma model next.
Alibaba and Honor Form AI Phone Alliance
Alibaba and Honor, a Huawei spin-off, agreed to collaborate on an "agentic OS" for AI-powered devices and plan to announce the partnership at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, which opens on July 17. According to the South China Morning Post and the Seoul Economic Daily, Alibaba's Qwen model will be applied to Honor's smartphones to develop an agent phone in which AI performs tasks autonomously while minimizing user operation. Honor earlier in July unveiled plans for an agentic OS in which AI reads user intent, recognises voice, gaze and movement, and coordinates collaboration across multiple devices. Alibaba separately said it is executing a plan to invest 380 billion yuan over three years in AI infrastructure and cloud, while Qwen ranks as the world's leading open-source AI model by download count. The alliance is positioned against Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for July 22 in London, where the Galaxy Z8 series is expected to debut.
UEFA Taps Alibaba Cloud and Qwen
Alibaba Cloud was named the exclusive AI and cloud computing partner of UEFA and UC3, the joint venture between UEFA and European Football Clubs, covering the 2027/2028 through 2032/2033 seasons and competitions including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. Alibaba will also serve as UEFA's e-commerce partner. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin and Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai announced the deal, with Alibaba supporting fan engagement and media and content management using its Qwen LLM. Alibaba Cloud already serves as the preferred cloud and AI partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and supported the Winter Games earlier this year. European regions covered by Alibaba Cloud include the UK, Germany and France.
Independent Tests Highlight Qwen Performance
An Agentic Trader study by the Artificial Intelligence Evaluation Lab at HKU Business School found that Alibaba's Qwen produced the strongest cumulative return among ten large language models tested on live foreign exchange markets, with a gain of about 9.9 percent. By the end of the six-week evaluation period, Qwen, Kimi and Seed generated the strongest returns, while GLM and GPT remained near break-even; DeepSeek recorded the largest loss at minus 15.1 percent. The study noted that higher trading frequency did not produce better returns and that greater risk-taking did not translate into better performance. Separately, Goldman Sachs initiated coverage on Zhipu, also known as Knowledge Atlas, with a neutral rating and a HK$1,880 price target, and identified DeepSeek and ByteDance as its other preferred Chinese AI model developers. Goldman Sachs analysts said Zhipu's GLM models and DeepSeek's offerings generally ranked ahead of Alibaba, Tencent and MiniMax on development speed and Arena score, while Alibaba's Hong Kong-listed shares have fallen nearly 10 percent over the past 60 trading days.
Qwen Ecosystem Expands Across Hardware, Apps and Capital Markets
QuestMobile reported that China's AI-native apps reached 499 million monthly active users by May 2026, with Qwen recording 167 million, behind Doubao's 382 million and ahead of DeepSeek's 130 million. Alibaba said more than 14 million users had used the college admissions counseling feature on its Qwen assistant by the end of June, while Baidu reported about 15 million students had used its AI assistant and Tencent said its Yuanbao chatbot had answered nearly 80 million college admissions questions. Alibaba's Amap launched ABot-World Studio, a real-time interactive AI world generator that runs on a single Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU and supports over an hour of continuous inference; the underlying ABot-World0 and ABot-3DWorld0 models have been open-sourced. PixVerse, a Singapore-based AI video startup, closed a $439 million Series C extension led by Alibaba, pushing its valuation past $2 billion as it pivots from video generation to real-time interactive worlds. Ant Group, Alibaba's financial affiliate, open-sourced SingGuard-NSFA, a guardrail framework designed to intercept prompt injection, credential theft and other agent security threats. Empero released Qwythos, a 9 billion parameter open-source model built on the Qwen3.5 specification with a one million token context window, and engineers reported a 4.7x prefill performance gain and 3.1x decode gain for Qwen3.5-397B on Google's Ironwood TPU after custom kernel and kernel-tuning work. Alibaba separately open-sourced Qwen-AgentWorld, described as the first language world model simulating seven agent environments inside a single model and reported to outperform GPT 5.4, and clarified that its Cainiao domestic supply chain unit will continue operating as an independent company serving both Alibaba and external merchants.
