Calculate mass percent from component and total mass

A mass percent calculator answers how much of a complete mixture is contributed by one component on a mass basis. Select whether you want mass percent, component mass, or total mixture mass. Use grams, milligrams, or kilograms consistently; the percentage is unchanged when both masses are converted by the same factor.

For example, 8 g of salt in a 50 g final mixture is 16% by mass. The denominator is 50 g, not the 42 g solvent mass. This distinction is essential: dividing solute by solvent produces a different ratio and should not be labeled mass percent of the solution.

Use the mass percent formula correctly

Mass percent = component mass ÷ total mixture mass × 100. To find component mass, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by total mass. To find total mass, multiply component mass by 100 and divide by the percentage. The calculator shows the selected rearrangement instead of hiding which value became the denominator.

Component mass cannot exceed total mixture mass, and a conventional mass percentage lies from 0% to 100%. Zero percent is valid when calculating a percentage or a zero component, but it cannot determine a finite total from a positive component because division by zero would be required.

Distinguish component mass from solvent mass

In a two-part solution, total mass often equals solute mass plus solvent mass. If a problem gives solute and solvent separately, add them before entering the total. If it gives a final mixture mass directly, do not add the component a second time. Mixtures with more than two materials still use the mass of every material in the denominator.

Mass percent is not percent composition from a chemical formula. This page compares a measured component with a measured mixture. Percent composition instead distributes a pure compound’s formula mass among its elements. It is also different from mass/volume percent, which uses final volume rather than total mass as the denominator.

Reverse-check units and preparation totals

Multiply the calculated total mass by the displayed percentage and divide by 100 to recover component mass. Subtract component mass from total mass only when the remainder genuinely represents all other materials. A negative remainder or a component larger than the total signals a copied value, unit, or denominator error.

The arithmetic does not account for loss during transfer, evaporation, reaction, moisture, purity, or measurement uncertainty. Use the actual final mass when those effects matter. Reporting a percentage with many decimal places does not make the underlying balance or product composition more precise.
