Choose the correct percent solution definition

The percent solution calculator keeps three common definitions separate: mass/mass (% m/m), mass/volume (% m/v), and volume/volume (% v/v). Select the definition named by the problem or label, then choose whether to find percentage, component amount, or final solution amount.

A result of 5% does not have one meaning by itself. It may mean 5 g per 100 g solution, 5 g per 100 mL final solution, or 5 mL per 100 mL final solution. The result always includes its basis so the number cannot be copied as an unexplained generic percentage.

Calculate mass/mass and volume/volume percent

For % m/m, divide component mass by total solution mass and multiply by 100. Both values must use the same mass unit. For % v/v, divide component volume by final solution volume and multiply by 100, again using matching volume units. The component cannot exceed the final total under these definitions.

To find component amount, multiply the final amount by percentage divided by 100. To find final amount, multiply component amount by 100 and divide by percentage. These reverse forms work without changing units because numerator and denominator share the same physical dimension.

Calculate mass/volume percent correctly

Percent mass/volume conventionally means grams of component per 100 mL of final solution. Five grams brought to a final volume of 100 mL is 5% m/v. The denominator is final solution volume, not the amount of solvent poured before dissolving the component.

A calculated final volume tells you what total volume the preparation should reach. It does not necessarily tell you how many millilitres of solvent to add because dissolved material can occupy volume. Follow the stated volumetric method and prepare to the final mark when accuracy matters.

Check basis, units, and realistic totals

Reverse the calculation by multiplying the displayed final amount by the percentage and dividing by 100. Keep the basis beside each value during the check. Converting between m/m, m/v, and v/v requires additional density information and cannot be done by simply reusing the same numeric percentage.

Real mixtures can contract, expand, react, evaporate, or contain material of less than stated purity. This page does not infer density, molar mass, assay, or significant figures. Use measured final quantities and an appropriate preparation procedure where these effects influence the result.

Private calculation and practical limits

The calculator supports educational and everyday percentage arithmetic, but it does not determine whether a concentration is safe, effective, sterile, or compliant.
