Graz, the capital of Styria in southeastern Austria, blends a UNESCO-listed Old Town with bold contemporary architecture, a Mediterranean-leaning climate and a serious food culture. Austria's second-largest city has been a UNESCO City of Design since 2011, and in 2008 was designated Austria's official "Capital of Delight," reflecting the importance placed here on regional cuisine, farmers' markets and producer-led cooking.
The compact old centre wraps around the Schlossberg, a 473-metre hill crowned by a 13th-century clock tower, while the Mur River cuts through the modern quarter where the Kunsthaus Graz (the "Friendly Alien") and the floating Murinsel platform define the skyline. July is one of the most popular months to visit because warm weather combines with a dense festival calendar – opera and chamber music, food events, outdoor cinema and a major international street-arts festival.
Weather and seasonality in July
July is typically the warmest month of the year in Graz. Daily highs average around 24°C and lows around 12°C, with about eight hours of daily sunshine and roughly 15 hours and 28 minutes of daylight between sunrise and sunset. The climate records at Graz Airport show July high temperatures averaging 26°C (78°F) and lows around 14°C (58°F), and identify July as the clearest month of the year, with skies clear or partly cloudy about 64% of the time.
That said, July is also the wettest month on average, with rain falling on about 14 days and totalling roughly 131mm of precipitation. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common, so plan outdoor walks for the morning and keep flexible backup plans for evening events. The average daily UV index sits at 7 (high risk), so sunscreen, hats and shade between roughly 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. are advisable. Light summer clothing is fine for daytime, but a light jacket or cardigan is useful on the Schlossberg, where it can feel noticeably cooler in the evening.
Arrival and local transport
Austria's currency is the euro. Conversion rates fluctuate daily, so check a live rate before exchanging money or paying by card abroad.
Graz Airport sits inside the city's public transport tariff zone 101. From the airport or the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), the centre is reachable by tram, bus or S-Bahn without changing operators. The dense tram and bus network run by Holding Graz Linien connects the Old Town, Schlossberg valley stations, Eggenberg Palace and the outlying districts.
Tickets are available from machines at Hauptbahnhof, Hauptplatz, Jakominiplatz and around 100 tobacconists across the city, via the GrazMobil smartphone app, from the Graz Linien Service Center (Jakoministraße 1, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–1 p.m.), and online. On board Holding Graz buses you can also buy tickets from cashless vending machines. Pre-purchased tickets must be validated before travel.
Current single-ride prices in tariff zone 101 include an hourly ticket at €3.30 for adults (reduced €1.70 for children 6–15 and people with disabilities) and a 24-hour ticket at €7.20 for adults (reduced €3.60). Children under 6 travel free; dogs need a separate ticket (€1.70 hourly or €3.60 24-hour). The same public transport ticket covers the Schlossbergbahn funicular. The Altstadtbim ("old town tram") is free within the centre on lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 16, 17 and 23 between listed stops, including Südtiroler Platz–Kaiser-Josef-Platz (lines 1 and 7) and Schlossbergplatz–Dietrichsteinplatz (line 3).
Attractions and month-specific events
The compact centre makes it easy to combine the major sights on foot. The official "Top 10" highlights include the UNESCO-listed Old Town, the Schlossberg with its Clock Tower, the Kunsthaus Graz, the Murinsel, the Styrian Armoury (often cited as the world's most important historic weapons collection), the Landhaushof courtyard, the Glockenspiel, Graz Cathedral, the Mausoleum, the Double Spiral Staircase and Eggenberg Palace on the city outskirts, itself part of the World Heritage Site. The Graz Museum Schlossberg is also a key stop inside the Schlossberg complex.
The Schlossberg can be reached four ways: by funicular with panoramic views, by glass elevator through the rock, by climbing the Schlossbergstiege (about 300 steps), or by a leisurely walk up from Karmeliterplatz. Tram lines 3 and 5 run to the valley stations.
Along the Mur, the Murinsel is a floating platform with a café, the Kunsthaus is a contemporary art museum in a biomorphic "blob," and the Murpromenade leads to the Augartenbucht and the Stadtstrand city beach. One-hour raft trips on the Mur depart from the city beach area near the Puchsteg; kayaks, SUP boards, water bikes and electrically powered Mur gondolas are also available for hire.
In July 2026 the cultural calendar is unusually full. Confirmed July events include:
- Aims Graz – musical performances including concerts, opera and operetta, 12 July to 15 August 2026. - Styrian Chamber Music Festival – concerts and musical events, 29 July to 6 September 2026. - VOLLMUND food event – 29–30 July 2026 (returning 27–28 August and 25–26 September). - Summer Movies @ Murinsel – free outdoor screenings on the amphitheatre (café if rainy), 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29 July, from 8:45 p.m., first-come first-served. - DeZwa @ Schlossberg Biergarten – live Austropop next to the Clock Tower, 13 and 27 July, 7 p.m.–10 p.m. - Poetry Slam @ Murinsel – outdoor live poetry competition on 16 July from 6 p.m. - La Strada Grand Opening – international street-arts festival kick-off at Oper Graz on 31 July at 7:30 p.m., with free performances across public spaces running into early August.
Historic centre walking tours run from the Hauptplatz until 19 September 2026 (then again 21 September–24 December). The electric shuttle city tour runs 1 April–31 October 2026.
Tickets, reservations and the Graz Card
For visitors planning multiple museums and lots of transport use, the Graz Card is the most flexible ticket. Two versions are available in 24, 48 or 72-hour versions:
- Graz Card (public transport included): 24h €32, 48h €42, 72h €47. - Graz Card Light (no public transport; Schlossberg lift included): 24h €24, 48h €30, 72h €35.
The Graz Card includes unlimited use of trams, buses, S-Bahn and regional trains in zone 101 (including Graz Airport), the Schlossbergbahn funicular, the Schlossberg lift, and free entry to the Graz Museum (Sackstraße and Schlossberg sites) and the Universalmuseum Joanneum's Styrian Armoury, Eggenberg Palace (state rooms, gardens, Alte Galerie, Archaeology Museum, Coin Cabinet), History Museum, Folk Life Museum, Kunsthaus / Contemporary Art Museum, Neue Galerie, Bruseum, Natural History Museum in the Joanneum Quarter and the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing. A historic centre walking tour is included. Up to two children under 15 can accompany each cardholder free. Note that some participating museums have reduced winter hours – check each venue before you visit. For the La Strada opening at Oper Graz on 31 July, the indoor production requires a ticket, while most street performances remain free.
Local dishes, food markets and dining customs
Styrian cuisine is built around regional, seasonal ingredients. Signature dishes to look out for include Backhendl (Styrian fried chicken), Käferbohnensalat (scarlet runner bean salad), Brettljause (a cold cuts platter), pumpkin cream soup, Wurzelfleisch (boiled pork), and desserts such as Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel. Styrian pumpkin seed oil, often called the "black gold of Styria," is poured generously over salads and is one of the region's defining flavours. Styrian wines, including the rosé Schilcher, are widely available in traditional inns and heurigen-style wine taverns.
Graz has the highest density of farmers' markets in Austria. The Kaiser-Josef Market and the Lendplatz Market are the most prominent, and many partner restaurants source directly from them. The "GenussHauptstadt" (Capital of Delight) logo identifies restaurants committed to regional and seasonal cuisine. The Graz Tourismus restaurant guide lists a wide range of inns, cafés and fine dining venues, ranging from classic taverns such as the Altsteirische Schmankerlstube to Styrian-Austrian kitchens including 3 Goldene Kugeln, das Ghega and Das Franz. Look for the seasonal asparagus, chanterelle and game specials when they appear on menus.
Travel costs, budgets and saving tips
Austria runs in the upper-middle range for European travel costs. A mid-range daily budget for summer 2026 typically works out at around €180–280 per person, covering a mid-range double room, three restaurant meals, attractions and local transport. City accommodation prices peak in July and August, so booking several weeks ahead is advisable, especially around the 29 July opening of the Styrian Chamber Music Festival and the 31 July La Strada opening.
In Graz, the most effective ways to keep costs down are:
- Use the free Altstadtbim within the centre and validate a single hourly ticket (€3.30) or 24-hour ticket (€7.20) for trips to Schlossberg valley stations, Eggenberg Palace and the airport zone. - Use the Graz Card for stays of 24–72 hours. If you visit two or three of the included museums and rely on public transport, the 72-hour version (€47) tends to pay back quickly. - Eat lunch with locals at the Kaiser-Josef or Lendplatz farmers' markets, or pick up regional products for a picnic on the Murpromenade. - Take advantage of free cultural programming – Summer Movies at the Murinsel, DeZwa at the Schlossberg Biergarten, and most La Strada street performances are all free to attend.
