The Quarter in Context

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX) reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $7,029 million, down from $7,582 million in the same quarter of 2025, with operating income of $2,003 million versus $2,432 million a year earlier. Net income attributable to common stockholders rose to $984 million from $772 million, producing diluted earnings per share of $0.68 versus $0.53. The headline year-over-year improvement in net income reflects an unusually light tax provision and a $699 million gain on the PTFI mud rush insurance settlement booked in the first quarter, not a repeat of the second-quarter operating result; causal direction is from the insurance gain and tax-rate shift toward higher reported earnings, not from underlying mine performance, which actually softened.
The second-quarter operating result was shaped by lower copper sales volumes linked to the still-disrupted Grasberg Block Cave restart, partially offset by a $138 million positive embedded-derivative mark on provisional copper sales and an 18% rise in six-months molybdenum realized pricing. Six-month operating cash flow of $3,543 million funded $2,077 million of capital expenditure, $434 million of common dividends, and $203 million of share repurchases, leaving cash and equivalents at $4,080 million and total debt at $9,386 million at quarter end. On a trailing-twelve-month basis, revenue of $25,257 million generated $5,900 million of operating cash flow and $1,605 million of free cash flow (operating cash flow less capital expenditure).
Business Model and Profit Engine
Freeport-McMoRan is an upstream producer: it mines copper, gold and molybdenum ore and sells concentrates, cathodes, rod, and by-product metals into globally traded commodity markets. Customers are industrial metals traders, smelters, refiners, rod mills and Mitsubishi Materials Corporation under the PT Smelting joint venture, who pay prices tied to LME copper, COMEX copper and London PM gold benchmarks. The defining feature of revenue is that it is transactional, not contracted: roughly 75% of 2025 revenue came from copper, 15% from gold and 8% from molybdenum, all priced off published exchanges.
Revenue flows into profit through a fixed-cost, high-volume mineral processing chain. Site production and delivery expenses of $4,320 million in the second quarter and depreciation, depletion and amortization of $523 million are largely absorbed against copper volumes; treating every incremental pound as gross margin rather than as variable cost is what creates operating leverage when copper prices move. Pricing power is constrained by global benchmark prices, so the company captures cycles through volume and grade rather than negotiated mark-ups. Pricing power over input costs—diesel, labor, reagents, royalties and export duties—is similarly limited; second-quarter Indonesia site costs ran at $0.97 per pound of copper sold versus an average realized price near $6.00 per pound on open positions.
Segment economics tell the story. Indonesia is the largest and most leveraged contributor, with copper and gold concentrate that drives a high gross margin once volumes normalize. South America (Cerro Verde) and U.S. copper mines provide scale and SX/EW cathode production, while molybdenum is a smaller but high-margin tail. Capital intensity is high: six-month capex of $2,177 million against $3,543 million of operating cash flow leaves the company reinvesting roughly 60% of operating cash flow back into the asset base, which limits the conversion of reported earnings into distributable free cash flow. Working capital is mine-and-mill inventory, including product, materials and supplies, and long-term mill and leach stockpiles of $1,074 million at quarter end, all of which carry value only when ore is processed and sold. Cyclicality is structural; the same fixed cost base that produces high margins at $5 copper can compress sharply when prices revert.
A data gap: the SEC-Q excerpts do not isolate maintenance versus growth capital expenditure. Author inference, not filing disclosure, is that a meaningful portion of the Indonesia capex is growth- and recovery-related following the September 2025 mud rush incident; the company has not labeled any specific line as maintenance. This gap limits how confidently one can claim a steady-state maintenance capex floor.
Earnings Quality and Cash Conversion
Where the issuer reports cash flow and capital expenditure cumulatively, the standalone-quarter cash-flow figures are derived by subtracting the preceding cumulative filing. They are calculations from SEC facts rather than separately reported quarterly line items.
Reported second-quarter net income benefited from a $138 million positive mark on embedded copper derivatives in revenues and an 18% effective tax rate versus 36% in the prior-year quarter, both of which lifted GAAP earnings without reflecting a change in the earning power of the mines. Stripping these items, the operating run-rate is closer to the $2,003 million operating income figure than to the $984 million net income figure, and that operating figure is itself down 17.6% from a year earlier on a trailing-twelve-month basis.
Cash conversion looks reasonable on the surface: six-month operating cash flow of $3,543 million versus $2,778 million of GAAP net income reflects the usual add-back of $1,037 million of depreciation, depletion and amortization. But a $171 million inventory build, $362 million decline in accounts payable, and $144 million of accrued tax payments absorbed working capital, leaving free cash flow narrower than operating cash flow would suggest. On a trailing-twelve-month basis, the company has converted roughly 27% of revenue into operating cash flow and roughly 6.4% into free cash flow. Stock-based compensation of $103 million for the half-year is small relative to revenue, so equity dilution is not a present concern, and the share count is essentially flat year-over-year.
A one-time $699 million PTFI mud rush insurance gain inflated first-quarter 2026 operating income and was matched by an offsetting cash inflow, so operating cash flow benefited dollar-for-dollar even as operating income did. The pair treated that insurance receipt as a current-quarter gain, which is a presentation choice that the reader should weight accordingly: it adds 2026 cash flow visibility but does not represent recurring earning power. The clear observable that would weaken earnings quality is a sustained drop in copper prices below $4 per pound, which would compress unit net cash credits in Indonesia and the by-product credit offsets, where 2025 Indonesia gross profit per pound was $3.70 on a by-product basis.
Business Quality, Moat, and Industry Position
The competitive position rests on reserve life, not contractual pricing power. Freeport-McMoRan consolidates three of the world's largest copper assets: Morenci in Arizona, Cerro Verde in Peru and the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia, which together represented 70% of 2025 copper production. Reserves are geographically diversified, with 38% of copper reserves in the U.S., 40% in South America and 22% in Indonesia; Indonesia holds 97% of gold reserves. This is a scale moat: substitution is theoretically possible but capital costs, permitting timelines and ore-body knowledge create a multi-decade qualification barrier for any new entrant.
Bottleneck strength: Freeport-McMoRan sits upstream in the supply chain and supplies a fragmented midstream of smelters, refiners and rod mills that depend on its concentrate and cathode volumes. Substitutability for industrial users is real but constrained, because copper is critical for electrification, EVs, renewables, grid investment and data centers, and the industry has limited ability to ramp new mines quickly. Concentration of supply is meaningful; Indonesia's Grasberg district alone accounted for 30% of 2025 copper production and 98% of gold production for the company. Order visibility is limited because of benchmark pricing, so what the company captures is volume, grade and cost control. Value capture is real but cyclical: at $6 copper, Indonesia runs at a $0.97 per pound site cost with material by-product credits, but at $3.50 copper the by-product credits collapse and unit economics compress sharply.
The company is integrated downstream through PTFI's recently completed smelter and precious-metals refinery in Indonesia, through Atlantic Copper in Spain, and through the Miami smelter and El Paso refinery in the U.S., which captures additional margin on a portion of mine output. This integration is meaningful but not unique among large copper miners, and its value to common stockholders is diluted by the substantial noncontrolling interests at PTFI ($12,113 million at quarter end) and at Cerro Verde, where Freeport-McMoRan purchased an additional 2 million shares in May 2026 to lift its interest from 55.08% to 55.66%.
The most likely observable that would weaken the profit engine is a prolonged copper-price drawdown combined with continued disruption at Grasberg, because the company's fixed-cost structure would compress margins quickly and Indonesia is the largest single asset. The deep reserve life is a long-duration asset; the question is whether the dated share price already credits that duration.
Management and Capital Allocation
Management's stated financial policy is to maintain a net-debt target, return capital through base and variable dividends and share repurchases, and reinvest in growth projects, primarily Grasberg recovery, U.S. leaching initiatives and South American expansion. Observable conduct over the past twelve months is mixed: $866 million of dividends paid, $203 million of share repurchases, and a $107 million tuck-in acquisition of additional Cerro Verde shares, alongside $4,295 million of trailing-twelve-month capital expenditure. The company has $2,796 million remaining on its $5.0 billion share repurchase authorization at quarter end, so buybacks are continuing.
Debt structure is conservative for a cyclical miner. Total debt of $9,386 million sits against $4,080 million of cash, for net debt of $5,306 million; the new $3.0 billion five-year FCX revolving facility entered in May 2026 replaces a maturing facility and PTFI refinanced through a separate $1.75 billion revolver. Interest costs of $240 million in the second quarter before capitalization, against $145 million capitalized, are well covered by operating cash flow. The leverage covenant is described qualitatively; the filings do not quantify the leverage ratio threshold.
Noncontrolling interests remain the principal capital-allocation friction. Of $2,778 million of consolidated net income in the first half of 2026, $913 million flowed to noncontrolling interests, leaving only $1,865 million attributable to common stockholders. Dividends to noncontrolling interests of $625 million in the half-year further reduce the cash available to common holders. This means that reported earnings power is higher than the cash flow available to FCX shareholders, and any thesis about long-term value must weight that gap. Management incentive alignment is observable: stock-based compensation is modest at $103 million for the half-year, there are no Rule 10b5-1 plan adoptions or terminations disclosed in the quarter, and a clawback policy is in place.
Valuation and What the Market Already Expects
The dated market capitalization of $88.7 billion at $61.71 per share represents the price the market is paying today for Freeport-McMoRan's future free cash flow stream. Based on the valuation analysis, the deterministic base-scenario fair market capitalization of $23.5 billion is materially below the dated price, so the market is already pricing in a more constructive combination of growth, margin and discount rate than the base scenario assumes, including a terminal growth rate that sustains above the rate used in the bear case.
Qualitatively, the dated price implies that the market expects sustained mid-cycle free cash flow generation well above the trailing-twelve-month $1.6 billion free-cash-flow figure, alongside a normalization of Grasberg volumes and a discount-rate environment materially more favorable than the base-case 9% assumption. The reverse-DCF implied growth of approximately 19% in the valuation analysis signals that the market is pricing in a sharp near-term recovery followed by durable expansion, not a base-case mid-cycle walk.
The market-cap-to-TTM-free-cash-flow ratio is approximately 55x, which is elevated for a cyclical capital-intensive miner. The market-cap-to-TTM-revenue ratio is roughly 3.5x. Trailing-twelve-month diluted EPS is approximately $2.28, and the dated price of $61.71 is roughly 27x that figure, but this P/E is sensitive to the timing of the Grasberg recovery and to copper prices; readers should treat any single-quarter or run-rate EPS-based ratio as a rough sensitivity, not as a steady-state multiple. Net debt of $5,306 million adds to the burden, taking enterprise value well above the equity capitalization.
Ten-Year Cash Flow to Fair Market Value
The starting free cash flow is the normalized SEC cash-flow proxy, while every growth rate, discount rate and terminal rate below is an explicit editorial assumption rather than company guidance. Each annual cash flow is forecast and discounted separately; terminal value is year-ten free cash flow multiplied by one plus terminal growth, divided by discount rate minus terminal growth, and then discounted back ten years. Fair market capitalization equals that explicit ten-year present value plus discounted terminal value and a same-date balance-sheet adjustment when available. If current cash and debt facts do not share one report date, the table shows the adjustment as unavailable and conservatively applies zero. The share count is derived from the dated market capitalization and share price so US shares and foreign ADRs use a consistent traded-security denominator.

In the reverse-DCF, holding the 9% discount rate and 3% terminal growth fixed, and solving only for one constant growth rate rather than using the base-case growth path, the current market capitalization implies roughly 19.1% annual free cash flow growth for ten years. This is a sensitivity framework, not a price target: the terminal-value share shows how strongly each result depends on assumptions beyond the explicit forecast. Negative margin of safety means the current market capitalization exceeds the scenario value.
Five Value-Investing Lenses
Benjamin Graham Lens
Graham would frame Freeport-McMoRan as a cyclical producer whose margin of safety depends on what a normalized mid-cycle earns, not what the most recent quarter prints. Trailing-twelve-month free cash flow of $1,605 million against a dated market capitalization of $88.7 billion implies a yield well below what Graham would associate with a defensive position. The balance sheet is solvent: $4,080 million of cash against $9,386 million of total debt, with $20,109 million of stockholders' equity and disciplined capex of $4,295 million trailing-twelve-month. But Graham would flag the gap between the dated price and the deterministic base scenario as evidence of speculation, not investment. A famous copper asset or a recovering share price does not itself constitute cheapness; the test is whether the cash flow stream supports the equity capitalization at a conservative discount rate, and on that test the stock fails today.
Benjamin Franklin Lens
A Franklin-style lens emphasizes capital discipline and opportunity cost. Freeport-McMoRan spent $4,295 million on capital expenditure over the trailing twelve months while generating $1,605 million of free cash flow, meaning roughly 73% of operating cash flow was reinvested in the asset base. The company returned $866 million in common dividends and $203 million in buybacks, modest relative to the equity capitalization, while paying $625 million of distributions to noncontrolling interests. Capital is being committed to growth at a moment when the share price already prices in successful execution; the opportunity cost of deploying marginal investment dollars at today's valuation is high. At 27x trailing-twelve-month diluted EPS with material noncontrolling-interest leakage, the price is not offering Buffett-style margin of safety. Capital allocation is shareholder-friendly in tone but constrained by Indonesia minority interests and by the capex burden of bringing Grasberg back to full production.
Charlie Munger Lens
Munger would invert the question: what would have to be true for the dated price to be justified? The market must assume a combination of mid-cycle copper prices sustained above recent realized levels, a successful Grasberg ramp, and a discount rate lower than the 9% used in the base scenario. Each of those is plausible individually, but the conjunction is more demanding. Inversion highlights the dominant incentive problem: the $12,113 million of noncontrolling interests at PTFI means Indonesian partners capture a meaningful share of the upside before common shareholders, and any operating miss disproportionately compresses FCX's per-share economics. Munger would also flag the September 2025 mud rush incident and the lingering investigation of PT Smelting activities as reminders that operational and governance surprises can quickly rewrite the thesis.
Li Lu Lens
Li Lu's framework stresses circle of competence, durable advantage and permanent-loss control. Copper supply is inside most investors' circle of competence, but Freeport-McMoRan adds Indonesian political and geological risk, U.S. permitting risk and South American community risk that require specialized monitoring. The durable advantage is the reserve base and the integration downstream; both are real and observable in the production mix. Permanent-loss risk comes from a sustained copper price collapse combined with Grasberg disruption, or from regulatory changes in Indonesia that affect the IUPK extension beyond 2041. The dated price offers limited cushion against those scenarios because the free-cash-flow yield is thin relative to a 50%-plus drawdown possibility. Without a durable margin of safety, even a high-quality asset is not a buy.
Risks, Disconfirming Evidence, and What Would Prove This Thesis Wrong
The thesis that the dated price is too high rests on three observable breakers. First, a sustained move in copper below $4 per pound would compress Indonesia's by-product credit offsets and eliminate the gross margin that makes the asset economics work; this is observable in real-time LME and COMEX prices. Second, a prolonged delay or failure of the Grasberg Block Cave ramp-up would suppress consolidated volumes and elevate unit costs, again observable through the company's production disclosures. Third, an adverse outcome from the PT Smelting investigation or a regulatory shift affecting the PTFI IUPK extension beyond 2041 would either impose penalties or shorten the reserve life, both directly observable through filings.
The most likely wrong assumption is that the $1,605 million trailing-twelve-month free cash flow is a sustainable run-rate; it likely reflects cyclical pricing and one-time items. Evidence that would force a more constructive conclusion includes a sustained copper price above $5 per pound combined with a clean Grasberg restart that lifts trailing-twelve-month free cash flow materially above current levels, paired with continued capital returns through dividends and buybacks.
The opportunity cost is meaningful: investors buying today are accepting a thin free-cash-flow yield and a 27x trailing P/E in exchange for an asset whose upside is largely already priced in, leaving the asymmetry skewed toward disappointment. A more conservative posture would wait for either a price decline that restores a margin of safety or a fundamental improvement that raises the deterministic fair-value range above the dated price.
Investment Conclusion
Freeport-McMoRan operates a long-lived, high-quality copper franchise with meaningful by-product gold exposure and a credible path to full Grasberg recovery, but the dated market capitalization prices the stock as if all of those favorable conditions are already realized. The base-scenario fair market capitalization is well below the dated equity capitalization, and even the bull scenario does not bridge the gap. Free cash flow is real but narrow relative to the equity capitalization, and the per-share economics are diluted by a substantial noncontrolling interest in the most valuable asset. The dated price therefore lacks a margin of safety, and the appropriate posture is Overvalued today. This conclusion is sensitive to copper-price direction, Grasberg operating performance and Indonesian regulatory outcomes; investors should reassess if any of those shift materially.
