Acquisition scope and strategic fit

Fortinet announced on August 17, 2026 that it has acquired Virtue AI, an AI runtime protection and automated AI validation vendor, advancing its broader Security for AI strategy and its vision for securing the agentic enterprise. The deal extends Fortinet's existing AI security portfolio, which includes the FortiGate Hyperscale Firewall and FortiAIGate, the latter introduced earlier in 2026 to safeguard large language models from prompt injections, data leakage, model poisoning, excessive resource consumption, and other emerging risks.
What Virtue AI brings
Virtue AI's technology is intended to extend Fortinet's coverage from network-facing AI defenses to the models, applications, and agentic systems themselves, spanning development through runtime. Core capabilities cited include the Guardian Agent framework, agentic system red-teaming across more than 50 sandboxed environments and 14 high-stakes domains, governance and visibility over agents and Model Context Protocol tools, continuous AI validation across more than 1,000 risk categories, and real-time guardrails across text, images, video, audio, and AI-generated code.
Expanded attack surface being addressed
Both announcements frame the deal as a response to a shifting enterprise attack surface that now includes prompts, models, agents, Model Context Protocol tools, application programming interface calls, and underlying AI infrastructure, alongside traditional networks, users, endpoints, applications, and cloud workloads. Fortinet positions the combination as a way to let organizations adopt AI with confidence, keep models secure in production, and audit their behavior through documented evidence.
Leadership framing
Ken Xie, Fortinet's Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer, said AI is fundamentally changing enterprise computing and that Virtue AI's technology will advance Fortinet's vision for continuous AI assurance across the AI lifecycle. The release also cites Gartner for the view that the market for securing AI ecosystems and AI agents is rapidly expanding, a tailwind Fortinet is using to justify the integration of Virtue AI into the Fortinet AI-Native Security Fabric.
What remains unspecified
Neither the press release nor the secondary coverage provides transaction terms, deal value, regulatory milestones, or a timeline for product integration. It is also not stated which Virtue AI products will retain their branding or how quickly Guardian Agent capabilities will be folded into existing Fortinet offerings.
