What Fortinet is buying
Fortinet has agreed to acquire Virtue AI, a San Francisco-based AI security startup founded in 2024, the companies confirmed on August 18, 2026. The acquisition adds capabilities for runtime protection, automated validation and security for autonomous AI systems to Fortinet's existing AI security line-up, which already includes the FortiGate Hyperscale Firewall and FortiAIGate.
How Virtue AI's technology fits
Virtue AI's platform is built around four core functions: agentic system red-teaming, agent protection and governance, continuous AI validation, and real-time security guardrails. The company says its automated testing exercises autonomous agents across more than 50 sandboxed environments and 14 high-stakes domains, and that its red-teaming engine covers hundreds of attack vectors and more than 1,000 risk categories with multimodal testing across text, images, video, audio and AI-generated code. A flagship component called Guardian Agent is designed to discover AI agents and tools operating in customer environments, scan Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools and source code for hidden risks, monitor agent behaviour and block malicious tool calls before execution.
Why Fortinet says it matters
Fortinet argues that as enterprises deploy more AI applications and autonomous agents, attack surfaces now extend beyond networks, users, endpoints, applications and cloud workloads to include prompts, models, agents, MCP tools, API calls and AI infrastructure. "AI is fundamentally changing enterprise computing, and security must evolve just as quickly," said Ken Xie, Fortinet's founder, chairman and chief executive officer. Fortinet described the deal as immaterial to its overall financial position and did not disclose terms.
Funding and company profile
Virtue AI had raised $30 million across seed and Series A rounds in 2025 prior to the transaction. Gartner, cited by Fortinet, projects the market for securing AI ecosystems and AI agents to grow from $2.8 billion in 2026.
Integration outlook
Fortinet plans to absorb Virtue AI's capabilities into its FortiAIGate platform, extending the Security for AI strategy across the full AI lifecycle from development through runtime. Integration with Fortinet's broader Security Fabric and customer adoption timelines have not been disclosed.
Uncertainty and outstanding details
The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, and neither company has given a target closing date. The exact size of Virtue AI's product portfolio relative to the rest of Fortinet's AI security business, and how quickly Guardian Agent will be offered as a generally available product, also remain to be clarified in subsequent disclosures.
