What the deal covers

Zayo announced an expanded strategic supply agreement with Corning to reserve "a significant portion" of the fiber optic cable it projects it will need through the end of the decade. The companies declined to disclose financial terms. The agreement is designed to give Zayo supply certainty as it carries out one of the largest network expansions in its history, including 15,000 new route miles by 2030 and more than 8,000 miles of new long-haul fiber developed in collaboration with NVIDIA.
Why AI demand is driving the move
Both companies framed the deal as a response to pressure from AI infrastructure on the physical inputs required to scale networks. "AI infrastructure is putting unprecedented pressure on one of the physical inputs required to scale it: fiber," Zayo and Corning said in a joint release. Zayo CEO Steve Smith said the company is "putting the physical inputs in place now to build ahead of it," while Corning Senior Vice President Steve Mitchell said AI is driving a fundamental increase in the amount and density of fiber required across networks. Securing cable earlier in the planning cycle is intended to remove material availability as a constraint on where and when Zayo builds.
Execution scale and existing footprint
Zayo's North American network spans approximately 224,000 route miles and roughly 32 million fiber miles, connecting more than 400 markets globally. The expansion plan adds capacity across existing corridors where AI infrastructure is concentrating, building on long-haul construction that Zayo Chief Network Officer Troy Lupe said typically requires years of planning, permitting, materials and disciplined execution. A Corning spokesperson said the Zayo agreement would not affect fiber availability for BEAD broadband program winners, a separate point of demand that Corning has said it is staggering shipments to align with deployment timelines.
Leadership transition at Zayo
The deal comes during a leadership change at Zayo. Smith will step down as CEO on September 1, when Sowmyanarayan Sampath will take over. Smith has led Zayo for nearly six years; Sampath previously spent more than 11 years at Verizon, most recently leading its consumer group. The expanded Corning relationship was announced under Smith's tenure and is positioned to support continuity of the 2030 buildout target.
What remains undisclosed
The companies did not disclose the financial value of the agreement, the specific volume of cable reserved, or the length of the supply commitment. Corning's role as a NYSE-listed supplier was not framed in dollar terms, and the deal's structure — whether a purchase commitment, reservation capacity or manufacturing allocation — was not specified in the announcement.
