Guidance Cut Anchors a Slower-Than-Planned North America Turnaround

PepsiCo told analysts its fiscal 2026 core earnings per share, on a currency-adjusted basis, will now rise only 1% to 2%, down from the prior low end of a 4% to 6% range, while specifying organic revenue growth of approximately 3%, within its previous 2% to 4% range. CFO Steve Schmitt attributed the revision to North American margin pressure "taking more time than we planned," with the fourth quarter expected to remain under pressure. The company also reported a third-quarter core operating margin of 16.9%, down 35 basis points year-on-year; year-to-date core operating margin was 16.5%, down 25 basis points year-on-year, despite top-line strength that included reported revenue above $20 billion and organic growth of 3.1%, the fastest pace since Q4 2023. Chief Executive Ramon Laguarta said PepsiCo is identifying "additional structural cost reduction actions" that will be implemented in the coming months to help fund brand investments and offset rising input cost inflation.

Beverage and Snack Weakness Forces a Pricing Reset

North American beverage volumes have fallen about 3% year to date, and third-quarter volumes were flat in food and down 2% in beverages versus a year ago, even as international operations delivered 8% organic revenue growth and a 105-basis-point operating margin expansion. Laguarta said management "doesn't feel good about the beverage business" and is shifting focus and urgency toward soft drinks, with higher investment planned for Pepsi, Mountain Dew and the recently acquired Poppi brand. PepsiCo cut prices up to 15% on Lay's and Doritos earlier in 2026 after losing grocery shelf space, but CFO Schmitt said those reductions ate into margins; the company will now raise some chip prices in coming months, though Laguarta stressed that even after increases, prices next year will remain below 2025 levels. PepsiCo is also expanding high-protein, fiber and simpler-ingredient options, including avocado-oil products, to counter GLP-1-driven shifts in consumer spending.

Activist Pressure and a Productivity Push Define the Cost Path

The deeper cuts arrive against the backdrop of Elliott Investment Management's roughly $4 billion stake taken about a year ago and the existing three-year target of a 100-basis-point core operating margin uplift agreed with the activist. PepsiCo framed the latest moves as part of its record productivity savings program, and management said revenue management tools would be deployed in coming months to partially offset margin pressure. Laguarta also pointed to an early pilot integrating snacks and beverages in select regions, while signaling it would refranchise bottling in areas where the integrated model is less effective.

Analyst Reaction Frames Results as "Marginally Better Than Feared"

RBC Capital Markets analyst Nik Modi wrote that results were "marginally better than feared" even as improvement has stalled under inflationary pressure, and warned that the beverage business "continues to disappoint" and will keep losing share to Coca-Cola and Keurig Dr Pepper unless PepsiCo refranchises fully. Shares were up about 1% in early New York trading, recovering modestly after entering the day down 14% year to date versus a 14% gain for the S&P 500. The Q3 beat on revenue and earnings was driven primarily by international growth and pricing, while the lowered guidance puts the spotlight on whether structural cost actions and selective price increases can restore North American margins into 2027.
