Shopify expands AI-agent connectivity

Shopify’s Fall ’26 Edition introduces connectors that let merchants use AI agents they already employ to manage products, inventory, orders and performance through chat. The announced integrations cover ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Duet, Copilot, Gemini, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse and Perplexity.

Shopify’s own Sidekick assistant is also being expanded to perform calculations, write code, search the internet and retain information supplied by merchants. Changes made by Sidekick still require merchant approval.

New tools bring AI agents into shopping

The company introduced shop.md, a shopping skill that can direct an AI agent to search more than one billion products, check out through Shop Pay and track orders. Shopify said agents can use shoppers’ preferences, sizes and Shop order history to tailor recommendations.

Shop Pay checkout is also being added to personal AI agents, starting with Meta’s Muse, Claude Duet and Instinct. Shopify said Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct can offer Shop Pay for brands outside Shopify, with buyers remaining in control and their card information not shared with the agent.

For merchants building AI-driven storefronts, Shopify said WebMCP is being rolled out across Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts and checkout. The tools expose structured product and checkout data so browser-based agents can search, update carts and complete purchases after buyer approval.

Payments and fraud tools broaden protection

Shopify Protect gained a rule builder through which merchants can write and test fraud rules. Shopify said signals from millions of businesses inform the system, allowing a card flagged on one store to be recognized at another. Shopify Payments reportedly prevents more than 12,000 high-risk payments per minute at no extra cost to businesses using the service.

The update also adds seven local payment methods: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay and GrabPay. Shopify said all work in online checkout, while most also work with Shop Pay, the Shop app and in person through Shopify POS.

POS recognition and delivery badges

Shopify POS can recognize more returning in-store customers when shoppers choose a digital receipt and agree to share their details, allowing the purchase to be linked to a customer profile. Shopify said a recognized in-store customer has more than 60% higher lifetime value than an unknown customer.

Shop Promise, a free program for eligible U.S. stores, displays delivery and return guarantees on qualifying products in product pages, checkout and the Shop app. Shopify said merchant eligibility has grown twentyfold, and badged products can also rank higher in Shop app search and the Shopify Catalog.

Developer security tool added

Shopify added an app security-check command to its AI Toolkit and Shopify CLI. The local tool reviews app code, extension-point configuration and dependencies for common vulnerabilities, then reports affected files and lines, severity and suggested code examples.

Shopify said the command is intended to complement developers’ existing security-review processes and software tools; it does not replace those reviews.
