Toyota Motor said on Tuesday that its global vehicle sales fell 6.4% year-on-year in August to 790,743 units and production dropped 5.9% to 700,860 units, the second consecutive monthly decline, with figures covering the Lexus luxury brand. The world's largest automaker attributed the weakness to persistent declines in China, the United States and the Middle East that had already weighed on July results.

China sales plunged on higher petrol prices

China sales fell 22.8% in August, dragging Toyota's global total lower for a seventh consecutive month, as higher petrol prices weighed on demand for hybrid and traditional combustion-engine vehicles. China output also dropped 11.3%, contributing to the overall production decline.

U.S. and Middle East slid while Japan partially offset

U.S. sales, Toyota's largest market, fell 4.4% in August, while Middle East sales slumped 37.5%, partially offset by a 9.1% rise in Japan. Output in Japan slipped 1.7%, in part because of production suspensions following an earthquake on the southern island of Kyushu.
