HBO renewed the Stephen King prequel series "It: Welcome to Derry" for a second season on August 17, 2026. The series comes from Warner Bros. Television, with Andy and Barbara Muschietti continuing as executive producers and directors expanding their feature films "It" and "It Chapter Two." Sarah Aubrey, head of HBO Max original programming, said the network is "excited to return to the chilling world of Derry." The renewal had been expected, with HBO reportedly waiting on the creative direction for the new season before making the announcement.
Creative Team and Showrunner Change
Brad Caleb Kane, who co-showran the first season alongside Jason Fuchs, will take over as sole showrunner for season two. Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs at Warner Bros. Television, said the series "will continue to captivate viewers with its spine-tingling new journey into the 1930s." The Muschiettis added that continuing to explore King's world is "an absolute privilege," praising the support of HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
Season Two Storyline and Setting
Season two is set in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammunition and encounter unimaginable horror. The new season expands the universe established by Andy Muschietti's two "It" feature films for New Line. Bill Skarsgård is expected to reprise his role as Pennywise the Clown.
Performance and Streaming Status
Since its premiere on HBO last October, "It: Welcome to Derry" has ranked among the top four series premieres globally in HBO Max history. The eight-episode first season is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
What Remains Uncertain
No premiere date, episode count, or production timeline for the second season has been disclosed. The full scope of returning cast beyond Skarsgård's Pennywise has not been announced.
