Universal Pictures' horror release Other Mommy earned $3.6 million from Thursday previews, beginning at 2 p.m. from 2,850 theaters and opening Oct. 9 on 3,365 North American screens. The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline both reported the preview figure as the headline number heading into the weekend.

Weekend projections put Other Mommy at the top of a crowded frame

Universal is projecting a roughly $20 million domestic opening for Other Mommy, which carries an $19 million production budget. Separately, BoxOfficeReport.com data cited by Media Play News projected Other Mommy would gross more than $28.5 million through Oct. 11 to lead the frame. Last weekend's No. 1, Amazon MGM Studios' Verity, was projected to add about $14 million in its second weekend, with Sony/Columbia's Resident Evil at a projected $8.9 million and Paramount's Heart of the Beast at a projected $7.4 million.

The Social Reckoning starts soft against The Social Network benchmark

Sony's The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin, grossed $650,000 from Thursday previews. The Hollywood Reporter reported the studio is expecting around $7 million for the frame on 2,600 North American theaters, while Media Play News projected a $6 million opening. By comparison, 2010's The Social Network opened at No. 1 with $22.4 million on its way to a $224 million global cume.

Critical reception splits the two openers

Other Mommy holds an 18 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score; The Hollywood Reporter's Richard Lawson called it "an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits and half-baked mythology." The Social Reckoning sits at 57 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with THR chief film critic David Rooney describing it as an "engrossing whistleblower thriller." Sorkin, asked about a possible third Facebook-centric film, told THR: "On Oct. 10, I'm going to be at the bottom of the mountain, and I will have no idea. So if a good story comes along and it takes place at Facebook, sure."

Wider frame also includes re-releases and new specialty titles

Media Play News listed additional projected weekend tallies: Universal/DreamWorks Animation's Forgotten Island at $4.7 million, A24's Primetime at $4 million, Universal's The Odyssey at $3.1 million, and Warner Bros.' Digger at $2.7 million. Angel Studios' Angel and the Badman, starring Tommy Lee Jones, was projected at $2.5 million, while Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment's re-release of Guillermo del Toro's 2006 Pan's Labyrinth was projected at $3.2 million; the film had grossed $83.8 million globally and $37.6 million in North America on its original run. The Hollywood Reporter separately noted limited releases opening this weekend, including Alex Gibney's documentary Musk, Chris Rock's Misty Green and the biographical drama Tenzing.
