Meccha Chameleon ranks second in June PC revenue

Industry data firm Newzoo's June 2026 rankings placed indie hide-and-seek hit Meccha Chameleon as the second-highest-grossing PC game behind Fortnite. The $5.99 title had sold 15 million copies within its first month after going viral, making it the fastest- and best-selling game of 2026 so far. Other notable entries in the monthly top 10 included Marvel Rivals, The Sims 4, and Dead By Daylight, with the latter climbing 16 positions on the strength of 10th anniversary celebrations. Forza Horizon 6, which led May's rankings, fell five spots after its launch wave.

Steam Workshop malware exploits Meccha Chameleon players

Independent researcher Feint documented a malware campaign that hid a Remote Access Trojan inside Steam Workshop maps for Meccha Chameleon. The malicious Blueprint executed when matches started, writing a batch file to the user's Documents folder that downloaded a second-stage payload. The original map "Laser Tag Neon" was removed, but replacement uploads such as "Chroma Grid Arena" briefly appeared. Developers lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro released version 3.1.0 to patch the underlying mod-loading vulnerability, and a later update 3.3.1 to further strengthen virus protection. During the fix, a system engineer's PC was compromised, allowing attackers to hijack the game's 100,000-member Discord server and ban staff members before the team regained control. The campaign echoed recent Steam Workshop malware incidents, including Wallpaper Engine submissions that prompted an FBI information-collection page.

Steam Frame VR launch signals strengthen despite Snapdragon pricing pressure

Valve's Steam Frame VR headset appears closer to release. Two additional shipments have reached US warehouses, and Steamworks SDK 1.65 now references the headset by name, adding controller and discovery support. Valve also opened a "Great on Frame" store section highlighting optimized titles such as Portal 2, which received a Frame Verified rating. Compatibility ratings are being assigned at an accelerated pace, with 16 games rated over 24 hours. However, Qualcomm has informed customers of a double-digit price increase on Snapdragon chips effective September 1, 2026. Because the Steam Frame uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 alongside 16GB of LPDDR5X memory and either 256GB or 1TB of UFS storage, the increase could push the headset past the $1,000 threshold.

Retail simulators flood Steam as release volumes and AI disclosures climb

Steam Week in Review counted 14 retail simulators released in the week ending July 26, including Boba Cafe Simulator, which accumulated more than 754 "overwhelmingly positive" reviews, and Bookshop Simulator, which exited early access on July 21. Polish publisher PlayWay shipped four titles during the same window and now lists 474 Steam products on SteamDB. Steam has already launched 13,359 games through mid-July 2026, on pace to surpass 2025's full-year record of 21,382 releases. Industry census data from developer Sulka Haro shows AI-use disclosures have climbed to 30.8% of 2026 releases, up from 19.9% in 2025 and 10.9% in 2024, with management and shopkeeper sims disproportionately represented. Valve is leaning into the genre with the fifth annual SimFest promotion, which runs through July 27 and features discounts on more than 125 sim titles.
